The Race Video Thread!

IIRC, in lower categories it's easier to get a decent result off an early jump - a lot of newer guys are weak in the 1 minute range, less alert in the final minute, and less willing to close a gap with a minute to go. In 2/3 and 1/2 races it's tough to have energy left at 1 minute to go, but those that do are ON IT. Plus they have teammates/leadouts. It's also hard to tell what kind of rider you are in cat 4. You could be a breakaway guy that hasn't figured out how to get the break to stick. Or a sprinter that hasn't figured out how to position well without blowing your sprint.
In the crits I participate in, it seems that breakaways almost always win the 3/4 and 1/2/3 races. So breakaways have to be part of my toolkit if I'm going to have success in the future.

Definitely have to be strong enough to get in those if you want to ever race for the win. But as mentioned, being in the break can be easier than being in the field. You just have to be able to get into the break, which can be very tough at times.

I was in a break for the vast majority a crit a few weeks ago. My AP/NP was very comparable to my teammate (very similar size to me, but lighter) who was in the field.

This is a cat 3/4 race. The most feared sprinter types were further back, didn't finish in the top 10. Not sure why. Burned too many matches earlier? Didn't care to sprint for 4th? Or maybe the pace was too high and nothing left in the tank. That guy behind Alvin was letting gaps open way before the sprint. I think he was gassed. He's a rider I'm not familiar with, don't know what his strength are. My NP for the race was in the 290s. I chased the break, I patrolled the front, and paced the group back to flyers. Pretty happy with my relative fitness, esp since I've been sick the past week. Funny thing is that Alvin is a newly minted cat 4.

I saw a vid of that from someone at the finish line and it looked sick. Just a wave of people piling on. Rough intro to PRTs!

You lasted longer than I did when we raced the crit at Masters Nationals. I went down at the start of the second lap - granted, I was able to get a neutral wheel and jump back in for a bit.

Barrio Logan p/1/2 in San Diego. This was the day before the pileup @ Dana Point.
I'll make an edited version, for now you'll need to suffer through 75 minutes of it like I did! Actually the last few laps are where the action is at, as you would imagine. It was a fun race.

Faced a dilemma in this race. teammate and 1 other guy up the road in 2nd lap, the heavy favorite to win attacked to bridge. I was the first person to try and mark him. Along with a teammate, but we are dragging the group toward the favorite. Ended up almost putting another team's sprinter in the breakaway was a result, when I sat up and stopped chasing. Also the dilemma of "racing for first" (i.e. trying to stop the favorite from winning, by preventing him from getting in a winning breakaway) versus "racing for the podium" (team resigned to compete for 2nd or 3rd).

raceride video from a dude out here. You can see me around 10min pushing a lady up the first hills, then not really again.
Mostly just want you all to see how many guys we get out on a tuesday, and how nice the roads are.

She's the DS for the Tibco pro team, ex olympian, etc. Riding right now with a broken pelvis or she wouldn't need any help.

8th place in my first A crit. The winner is a previous winner of Dirty Kanzaa. One of the guys in the sprint finish with me, I had just been watching in previous weeks on televised feed of crit week. So definitely a different level than what I am used to in the C crits.

Will be out that way next week, trying to get a Saturday ride together with some friends for Hwy 9 -> West Alpine -> Coffee in Pescadero -> Tunitas. You're more than welcome to join if that sounds relevant to your interests.
