I know there are a few in this sub-forum who use the larger seat bags, so I thought I'd start here: I do not care for clipping my rear light to my seat bag. Its not sturdy or secure. I've seen bikes with seat-stay mounted lights and I am curious if there is a commercially made mount available for this application? I pondered trying a helmet mount, but I want something secured to the bike. Any ideas? Many thanks in advance.

Cateye makes some inexpensive lights that use AAA batteries.

Most long and narrow rubber band mount lights (such as the Cateye Rapid X2 or X3, or the Topeak RedLite Aero) will easily mount to the seatstays unless you have some unusually shaped seat stays (like my Fuji Transonic aero bike).

I have PDW Radbot, Planet bike Superflash, and Cygolite Hotshot taillights with seat stay mounting.

Dinotte also has seatstay mounting. Comes with a whole bag of mounts.

I have also mounted a taillight on the rear dropout on my foldup bike that does not have convenient seatstays with the right angle for mounting a light. I had a spare piece of aluminum bar stock that I used, but with a long bolt or threaded rod you might be able to mount one to a fender or rack mount directly. You can get quite creative if you think about the problem.

I did that with a seatpost mount Supernova taillight. People told me it was very visible, I always had my doubts.

I didn't like the rubber strap mount on the aero post, so I modified a reflector mount.

all my bikes are foldups (or foldup sized) and I had considered that position myself.

I've always felt however, it was better to keep the light closest to the head-height of motorists behind you (who are obviously the biggest risk)

But I suppose it depends on the dispersion angle of your light

I am most concerned about car drivers seeing me when they are approaching from over a hundred feet away, and when they are that far away the light could be that low and still be quite noticeable. If the drivers are so close to me that a light that low is unnoticed, my light was not bright enough when they were still over a hundred feet away to get their attention.

And the axle level is not that much lower than a seatstay mount like in the photo. In the photo I have the stealth version of the Planet Bike Superflash on one seatstay and on the other seatstay I have a Secula Plus. I screwed up when I ordered the Secula, I accidentally ordered a fender mount light, not a seatstay version, so I cut a piece of angle aluminum to use as a bracket, then used two P clips to hold that bracket to the seatstay. I have to be more careful when I order things on line. Photo was cropped from a much larger photo, sorry about loss of resolution.
