BB tool

Is the Park Tool BBT-22 the proper tool for this bottom bracket? It is 20 spline.

That may work. What BB is that?

Shimano also makes a little plastic gismo that adapts one BB wrench to another. So if you have a wrench and it's too small....

That tool won't adapt anything on a cartridge square taper BB. It's used on external bearing HT II BB's to adapt the smaller OD newer cups to a larger OD older tool. It often comes with the new BB.

Thanks dedhed. I got one with my new Ultegra R9000 BB. I should have noticed: this fits into a tool IIRC, and fits the 39mm, 16 lobe BB nut on the outside. Duh!

So, is there one tool for all Shimano taper axle BBs?

My best to you - I grew up in SE WI.

BBt-22 (or equal like UN-74) 20 spline tool should be the correct tool.

Italian thread tells you which way to turn it. I suggest you research Italian thread BB to get familiar with which way things turn on which side.
I'll also tell you to go purchase a metric threaded bolt of the correct thread & length with a washer or two to bolt the tool in place. These are sometimes in very tight and trying to torque on it and hold the tool in place leads to an epic failure.



So, is there one tool for all Shimano taper axle BBs?
I believe this to be true for all their cartridge BB's including Octalink.

I have a couple different length bolts + washers to cover short to long.
8mmX1. Not the more common 8mmX1.25.

That was the worst one I've ever seen. Guys winter bike and he rode every day, never maintained anything.

The bearings were literally falling out. I was actually able to remove the axle before removing the rest. I had to bolt the tool with big washers to the shell on the DS. Then a few days of PB blaster, heating up the shell, and still a 2 foot cheater on the breaker bar. I thought I was going to rip the threads right out of the shell. I was able to get the new one in to the rough threads but told him, "you will never get another new BB in here again". LBS wouldn't even touch it.

He stuck about $200 with my time into a Diamondback hybrid but really liked that bike and insisted on fixing it rather than spend $100 more on a comparable level new or lightly used hybrid. To each his own.

CV nuts get the Ingersoll 2130 impact on 110 psi. This was way harder.

The QR only works if the axle is hollow. Many of the cheap ones aren't

I quit trying to remove them the old fashioned way and went to the Snap-On 1/2" drive with the correct tool. Takes less than a minute, and eases the pain in my left shoulder. Smiles, MH
