1970 Stingray Fastback barn-find rescue...
I picked up this sad find and tore it down to do a “refurbish”, not a restoration. I wanted to keep it as original as possible.
It was a long drive to Springfield , MO to get this little gem. It has a Schwinn Dealer sticker on it from A and B Cycle where it was originally purchased, and it turns out that shop is still there today.
It was a fun and rewarding little project.

When I was researching my Schwinn fastback Pro, I saw a lot of those in the image file. It brought back some great memories!

Real nice job on this Fastback. I like this color from Schwinn. I learned a bit on the Fastback models when I found this bike. Coaster brake model. Hoping to find correct parts eventually. 
As I got it.
Paint is super rough but you can just make out “ stingray deluxe” on the chain gaurd

that Deluxe is cool, and will be fun to whip back in shape!
i know you can find suppliers on eBay that sell reproduction Stingray tires (where I got mine) including the white-wall version, which I think the Deluxe models came with.

My neighbor had one when I was a little kid. It was orange. I was so envious.

There is a service where you can ship your seat off and they strip the shell, refinish and recover it with the proper material and trim for your model bike, topping it with a repop Sting Ray tag.
It was a bit pricy, but they did an amazing job!

It was worth it for sure. Glad to know someone offers the service. The shiny new seat covering makes the whole bike pop. Looks great with the cleaned and polished original finish - which I'm glad you kept. Just enough beausage.

'73 Fastback
I got this '73 Schwinn Fastback at a garage sale when I lived in NY for $4. I (foolishly) repainted the frame, not the chainguard and it is pretty much as I got it. It still has the original whitewalls. I wound up giving this (and a 1999 reproduction Krate) to my nephews who ride them all of time.

The picture above with a different handlebar a small seat having replaced the banana seat just reminded me of something I haven't thought about in a long time.
My parents gave me my first bike in 1974, I think. It was a green Ross that looked similar to the restored bike the OP is showing us. It had banana seat with a sissy bar and those long handlebars. In 1978, we moved to another state and I got a different bike.
So, it must have been around 1976 - 1977 when banana seats had become absolutely uncool. BMX bars and a "single" seat, as I think we called them then, had become de rigueur for boys. If we didn't have a BMX bike, we at least wanted a bike more in the BMX style than what the older kids in the neighborhood used to ride. Somewhere I scrounged up a black seat with springs on the bottom and metal rivets on the back and installed it on my bike with the use of my father's adjustable wrenches, most likely. I don't remember changing the handlebars, but I remember the seat situation very well.
It's possible that the bike I'm quoting in this post was modified for similar reasons around the same time.

if you ever want to, they make new duplicates of all the water transfer decals for all of the Stingray models. My chain guard graphics are new replacements. You can find them on eBay.

It is too small for me to ride now but I like it anyway. The patina on the paint is character not wear.

The first thing to break was always the pedals, then the fork, then the bottom bracket. Picked up this 65' super deluxe a few weeks ago. Guess I'll post the pictures here.
