New Frame = New Bike?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Frame = New Bike?

How much do you have to change on your bike before you would call it a different bike? If you change every part on your bike except your frame, is it the same bike? If you transfer every component from an old bike to a new frame is it a new bike?

Next question is if a used frame = new bike? or older frame = new bike?

If new to you, then yes.

Well even so simple as a bar tape change can make a bike "feel" new... if not "actually" new.

I disagree, new frame is a new frame.

For new bike, I think you need to replace pretty much everything except the wheels.

Why skip with wheels?

Agreed. It has to be new frame, new components, and new wheels.

By this standard, I almost never buy a new bike. Most importantly, I can tell my wife, I haven't gotten a new bike in years.

Now that is what is important. I have a great Klein frame with totally shot components that all need replacing. I can just get all new everything, minus the frame and fork, but its not a new bike...in her eyes...

New bike frame with old components = new bike frame with old components. It could be "like new" but not really new. Get an old car, strip it of all its components and replace them with new parts...still an old car WITH new components.

^^True, new groupset almost never registers.

Problem is that for significant others, new frame=new bike. So if you're taking the hit anyway, you might as well get new wheels and components as well.

Like the guy who had Daniel Boone's axe. Of course the handle had been replaced 4 times, and the head 3.

Sell the bike. Tell people that it is brand new. If some poor schmuck buys it thinking it is brand new, wait to hear from his/her lawyer. Retain an attorney. Go back to 41 and let us know the findings

Unless it's the same color, then new frame=same bike.
