Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Where can I buy this stem?

Specialized are quite happy to sell the white version and red version, but don't sell it in black. They do sell a black-ish one, but it has the old style graphics.

It would suit my project black frame and seat post perfectly, so I'd rather have this before considering other brands.

Uhm, maybe from your local specialized dealer?? How can they make it but not sell it?

Do you really think I didn't try that before posting my question?

According to a Specialized dealer in the Czech Republic that I have dealt with before, this stem only comes with a complete bike (2011 S-Works Roubaix Di2) and cannot be bought separately, not in Europe anyway. I haven't seen it as a separate component on any other country's website either.

It seems they do make it and not sell it . . . not separately anyway.

Is there anyone who knows why Specialized do this?

Exclusivity. Specialized has a habit of not selling parts of a completely built bike in the line-up. If you want to build a bike out of Specialized parts out of your own specification, you will have to deal with the parts they have for sale.

It also keeps the dealers from making up their own line-up to sell to the public. It also helps the buyers know that if they buy an S-Works bike, the dealer is not cheating them out of parts specified for the bike and replacing it with cheaper parts.

At least, that is what the Specialized dealer told me.

This sounds very annoying but if Specialized won't sell you one and you can't find one on Ebay, you may have to reconsider your options - either get a red or white one and paint it, or find another stem.

Personally, I love my 3T Arx Team...

Well that would certainly explain it. If I had known this beforehand I would have almost certainly gone down a different route.

Thanks for the info.

They indeed seem to be my only options.

sounds like you're going through a lot of trouble for a mediocre stem?

Specialized Stems aren't really weight weenie friendly as even the S-Works carbon stem weighs 160g for 110 mm.

LOL. Isn't that the nature of the beast with all modding, from bikes to hot rods? Run what ya brung comes to mind, and start from there. I'm grateful I have a mid-life crisis car and bike, but I still wouldn't race a hot-rodded Honda Civic...all that trouble to go fast and then break at the end of the 1/4 mile.

Want glossy black? Just Zipp it. And it's 40g lighter than the S-Works.

I don't know, but when the Lynskey arrives she'll be all done up with Service Course SL post, bar, and stem. Should be a nice looking setup. And I already have a Torx bit from my MTB days so I'm set.

EDIT: The googles tell me it's for a better tool grip and less stripping on those little bolts. Having just had a bolt on a Deda Newton strip on me I guess I appreciate that.

Torx is supposed to be the Next Big Thing. Better grip and less chance of rounding out the heads too. Of course you need to upgrade your toolkit but that's never a bad thing.

Have only used them as deck screws but they seemed to live up to billing.

They seem to have gotten their start with disc brakes. Small bolt, lots of torque. They do seem to work quite well.

So what happens if you buy the bike that comes with that specific stem but for a proper fit you need another size than the bike comes with, does Specialized send the dealers spares of that specific one in all sizes to only be used when purchasing said bike?

Yes, that is what one Specialized BG FIT certified dealer does.

Get a 3T or Ritchey Carbon one...way better. That black S-Works stem is OEM only on fully built Tarmac bikes and is what many consider a very mediocre quality stem, in terms of weight and stiffness.

Many thanks for all the good info.

My money will be going to Zipp, 3T or Ritchey once I've had a closer look at each. I need new handlebars as well, so will look at each of those manufacturers again.

I will never buy anything manufactured by Specialized again; their UK "customer service" is not only worse than useless, but very patronising to boot.
