GOPRO HD edditing software ?

I have a GOPRO HD camera and I just received my LCD backpack for it. I am a bit of a novice at editing and was wondering what people are using for software. I am running a PC with Vista. I guess my 1st question would be is there any free editing software that is compatible with the gopro that I can get started with? I am not beyond purchasing software but I would like to get a little learning in before I purchase a quality software program. So the question is I guess is what are you using and what would you recommend

Adobe Premiere Elements 9, right now. The free trial puts a watermark on final videos, but you can get a really good feel for the app. I was using Premiere Pro, but the older version I had couldn't handle the HD video. Premiere Elements a little too simplistic for my tastes, coming from Premiere Pro, but Elements does an okay job for now.

And doesn't Mac come with an app that natively handles HD H.264 MP4 video? If you're running Windows, you can convert the MP4 to WMV and use Windows Movie Maker to edit the videos.
