Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Aks are heavy, even with composite stocks. Here is mine:

Sadly I miss it. I sold it because I am moving to California, and assault weapons are not legal there. I think a Glock G36 would be a simple, and effective cycling tool.

Hi WeatherGuesser,

How are you doing after a weekend of reflection and recovery? Better, I trust!

I know this may sound cynical to some, but after 55 years, it is more the resigned voice of experience. When I hear of incidents (crimes) like this, I really get mad. It is just another indication of how far downhill we are going and kids are just getting more and more arrogant. I never considered doing things like this as a teenager, and I would have been appalled even then at such behavior. These kids belong in a place (prison) where they can be restrained from doing this kind of thing, and I do not think much of the parents either. Somehow I doubt that this kind of behavior is new to these punks, yet they have the privilege of driving somebody's truck. However, as others have said, victims in this country are usually victimised twice, once by the perpetrators, and then again by our justice system. I will be skeptical about whether they really get punished for it or not. Because of the frustrations this "Justice" causes many people, they are tempted to take the law into their own hands and then even worse things befall them even though they are the victim. I do hope that I am completely wrong in this case and that they are put where they belong. It would be nice if the truck is confiscated too!

Please keep us advised as things progress! Either way, I'm sure we would all like to know.

Regards,
Jefferito

Uh... he lives in the Peoples Demokratic Diktatorship of Kalifornia. Self defense with firearms is not an option.

Personally, I believe the only reasonable penalty would be losing their licenses until they're 21. And if they get caught driving or doing a fool thing like this again, the license goes away forever.
Riiiigghht. A million illegals are trembling right now at the thought of losing their driver's licenses. so are thousands of convicted drunk drivers. Taking the license away simply means they drive with no license. Or insurance. These people don't care.

sarcasm on:
Really weather Guesser, are you certain you didn't bring this on yourself? After all, you're riding a bicycle on a ROAD -- clearly intended for CARS. You invaded their space. And you obviously didn't tell the Universe you wanted to complete your ride (on a road you infiltrated) in safety. You know, like it says in The Secret.

sarcasm off.

Seriously, i hope the cops catch these little prix, and immediately prior to their court appearance the DA's spouse filed for divorce due to sexual unfulfillment. Then you'd stand a chance of them being punished.

as far as riding goes... sunday i rode the same road at about 8am and not a car in sight... i ended up doing a little more than 56 miles and over 3k ft ascent. i'm not gonna let this deter my riding.. i've had nothing but good experiences on that and every other road... i guess i just happened to be the target of opportunity... but i'm still wondering why the kid had a tree branch in the cab of his truck...
i've thought of all the stuff i could do to get back at them.. but then i'd likely be the one getting busted.. i mean the cops already have all my info.. if anything happens to the kids.. i'm sure the cops would come right after me..
as far as the update goes... no call from the sheriff today.. i was really hoping to get a call.. i'll wait til wednesday and see if i hear anything. then i'll call and see what the progress is.
yes i realize that they could be prosecuted and i realize that nothing could happen either... i'm just going to wait and see what happens...
one other thing. i've told a lot of people about this and i really hope they don't mess these kids up.. like i said.. they'll come looking for me..

I have somewhat of a photographic memory and can memorize sequences such as numbers well. Their liscense plate would be mine!!! Nobody really respects bikers. I told kids in my class I don't have to worry about parking like they do because I bike, They looked at me like I was poor or something. However working 20 hrs a week and going to college full time I pull in about $500 extra bucks to blow on whatever while they go to work so they can just drive to school! Sorry to hear you got hit with a stick and hope they catch the guy. Keep biking!! Its still worth it!!

It happens.

3 punk kids (pedestrians) knocked me off my bike (on the road.) Face plant, ER visit, several weeks healing, permanent facial/body scars.

My life moved on. I hope theirs did.

Mountains, beaches, redwood forests, great weather, and beautiful women are some of the reasons (oh, and less rednecks ).

But just for clarification, are you saying that you can only "live free" where you're permitted to carry a weapon whose primary purpose is to kill people?

If so, have you considered immigrating to Afghanistan or Iraq? Just wonderin'...

oh yeah.. my garmin edge sort of helped a little... he asked me if i knew what time it happened... i said didn't remember.. but then i realized my edge knew... i opened up sport tracks and had the exact times of both incidences... woot garmin!

Great! Any word yet from the SD or the DA?

LOL - like Atlanta, DC, New York, St. Louis, or any other large metro area doesn't have gangs and traffic.

As for the high cost of living...I'm sure it's cheaper to live on the flat treeless prairies north of Dallas (where I grew up), or in places like Ohio, Arkansas, Mississippi.

But I'd rather live 45 minutes from a national park, where my annual self-supported century ride includes views like this:

and, this:

Some things are worth paying for, and life's too short to live in the flat states (IMO, of course).

Plus, I've never felt the need to own an assault rifle, hand grenades, RPG's, etc. I figure my pistols and shotgun offer sufficient protection against most conceivable threats, and the "freedom" to own such weaponry surely wouldn't tempt me to move to a flat red state.

Yeah, fortunately, if there are no eye witnesses, there is nothing the police can do except ask you if you did it. I had someone park in front of my driveway while they went to embide at a local drunk tank and so I called the cops. Usually, the cops will contact the person's house and the person will appologetically come out and move the vehicle. This time, the person "couldn't be found", i.e. had already drank too much and didn't want the cop seeing him drive. The cop wrote a ticket and asked me if I wanted it towed. I said no, as I'd freak out if my vehicle was missing. Well, the next morning, I awoke to nice big scratches on my hood. The cops "investigated" by asking the owner if they did it. The answer was "no". Nothing else was done.

Unfortunately, my deductable was more than the damage, so it didn't get covered and I was out the cash for it. Next time, it gets towed!
