An extremely contrasty scene taken midday today with an iPhone 11. I was more interested in the dynamic range of the scene than composition.

Exif data indicates an exposure of f2.8 @ 1/1500 sec. at 19mm focal length. My phone's light meter app indicated a nine stop difference in brightness in this scene. I'm really impressed with the shadow detail in the original, as well as the camera. The portrait of Gabe (above), my ancient tabby, was also made with this phone.

If you've followed this thread in the last couple of years you may have noticed my enthusiasm for my Pixel phone's camera. As it is it's nice enough but I find it's range greatly extended by the app Snapseed. I thought I might share some of my experiments with it on one picture. I've nowhere near discovered how to use all of the tools properly and fooling around with them is part of my pleasure.

This is the original in-camera shot. I chose to expose for the highlights by selecting a spot on the white petals, this gave me some nice deep shadows. They mask the distracting stuff in the background.

Then I opened the file up in Snapseed, cropped it a bit and used a free perspective control to stretch out a couple of corners. I find this tool extremely useful for architectural pictures.

I opened up the original again and applied a "drama" filter, selecting a degree of filter I might have fooled around with tint too, I didn't record my steps.

With this last one I again opened the original and used the selective focus control primarily. I also used the white balance and probably a couple of other minor tweaks.

Fun little app, I think it's available for iOS also.

nicely illustrated!!! Do you use Snapseed in your glass light reflection photos too?

Nik software did some excellent photo-editing applications with both multiple image editing plug-ins and tools for Adobe photo-editing software (which i use) and image enhancements for IOS and Android with Snapseed. Both are wonderful for bringing more creativity to digital photography.

If you are referring to those, apparently not. They aren't in my Snapseed file. Some of my stuff is straight out of the camera.

The Long-tailed Duck will be heading back to the Arctic again before too long.

You usually hear them before you see them - hearing a dozen or more calling across the water is impressive.

We've been back from Costa Rica for a few weeks now. These shots were taken the other day on the Lake Ontario shoreline, west end of Toronto. I know I have posted pics of these ducks before but I never get tired of them. My gym and a lot of other other places are now closed due to the Corona virus so getting outside with a camera is a good relief. Take care and stay well everyone.

Thx. I sat on the pond's shore for a few minutes. There was this rock with two bumps. That looks like a frog. But it didn't move. I waved. Nothing. Must be a rock.

Finally I got up, walked to the bike and changed lenses. It hadn't moved. Must be a rock. I was happy to be wrong.

Only a pic from my crappy phone. This was this afternoon on Waterloo Bridge in London, normally so busy with traffic and people that you'd never be able to easily amble into the central reservation for a photo opportunity. But the Corona virus has had what 6 months ago I would have thought an unimaginable impact on the city in 2 short weeks, and today it was almost deserted. So this pic feels extra poignant in the current climate. The typically English grey sky just adds to the scene.

Playing with the iPhone and a raw app rather than working. Caseload has dropped due to coronavirus fears.
