Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Friend dialed it to 400 watts and broke Trek rear triangle

This photo was taken Saturday, when a few of us were climbing up Mt. Soledad.
He said he felt like he had a flat tire. lol
.

He called his wife for a ride home.
This photo taken from the top.

This is why I never dial it up to 400 watts. Safety über alles.

It does get hard, holding back, sometimes.

Weird; I wouldn't have expected it to break right in the middle of the stay like that.

The Via Capri side. But not on Via Capri. There is a paved fire trail above the road.

Trek's are good for the self estheem. Making 250 watts seem like 400 watts and all.

Yes, Via Capri is the north side street with occasional 17% stretches. Last time I went there, I felt like _I_ was going to break.

Let me guess, heavy guy pedaling out of the saddle?

Yes. He was a portly gentlemen. His wife might call him 'pleasingly plump'.

I was looking at the SRAM installation pdf. If you run a dork disk with a SRAM red rear derailleur it can cause what they call 'bizzaro forces' to occur.

Yup. Luckily I've never made the call of shame. And I even recently saved two friends from making that call of shame to their wives. (Although it may not technically be a 'call of shame' if you call a friend, instead of a spouse).

One guy I picked up and drove to the ER. He was pretty messed up.

The other guy, we stuffed his bike in the back of my car and gave him a ride home. (photo below).
His Parlee was totaled, but insurance paid for everything.

Looks like there may be a small fracture above the dropout. If that's the case, the rest of the seatstay wouldn't be able to support the loads especially out of the saddle with lateral loading and the big failure resulted because of that

I did verify that he is the 'original' owner, just to eliminate that one issue.

Good call. I just zoomed in on that original photo and it looks like you are correct.

I never rip on Trek carbon frames, but I have cracked a BB casing bond on one.

It's an imperfect world that we live in.

UPDATE TO THE ORIGINAL POST
Trek denied my friend's warranty claim. They said something along the lines (I'm getting it second hand) that the bike must have been previously crashed because it couldn't have happened simply by climbing out of the saddle.
