Yes, Via Capri is the north side street with occasional 17% stretches. Last time I went there, I felt like _I_ was going to break.

I was looking at the SRAM installation pdf. If you run a dork disk with a SRAM red rear derailleur it can cause what they call 'bizzaro forces' to occur.

Yup. Luckily I've never made the call of shame. And I even recently saved two friends from making that call of shame to their wives. (Although it may not technically be a 'call of shame' if you call a friend, instead of a spouse).
One guy I picked up and drove to the ER. He was pretty messed up.
The other guy, we stuffed his bike in the back of my car and gave him a ride home. (photo below).
His Parlee was totaled, but insurance paid for everything.

Looks like there may be a small fracture above the dropout. If that's the case, the rest of the seatstay wouldn't be able to support the loads especially out of the saddle with lateral loading and the big failure resulted because of that

UPDATE TO THE ORIGINAL POST
Trek denied my friend's warranty claim. They said something along the lines (I'm getting it second hand) that the bike must have been previously crashed because it couldn't have happened simply by climbing out of the saddle.
