If you could take the month of April in USA to cycle where would it be?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If you could take the month of April in USA to cycle where would it be?

Hi to all, Suggestions are welcome.

If you could take a whole month for cycling in April in the US, where would you go and why? Thanks

Utah/Colorado

Grand Junction ... Colorado Monument
Moab ... Arches National Park
Further south exploring the Bryce Canyon and Zion areas
And lots more!

Spectacular part of the world.

We've only spent a relatively short time in those areas, but we'd like to spend a month there some time.

Spring is a great time to bicycle the Pacific coastline, from Canada to Mexico. Winter rains are mostly gone and the summer wind and fog hasn't picked up yet.

There is usually a lot of snow in the high mountain areas of the USA until June or July.

If you come to California you will find a lot of different types of cycling. For one thing, it's almost a thousand miles long and I think it's a few hundred miles wide. Cycling would include everything from cycling at sea level to climbs in the high Sierras.

I would stay away from the high mtn regions. April, on average is still a heavy snow month. And if it isn;t snow it will be rain and colder temps.

Can't really say about Wash or Oregon (leave that to those locals), but from the California border south to San Diego, April & may are great riding times. You can even go into the state center without getting badly roasted.
Either cycle touring or centering in an area for some days, doing the rides and then moving to another town.
Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara - you couldn;t really scratch the surface in a month... all have large cycling communities - and there are more... even down in San Diego, if you have some extra cash - La Jolla - can be a fun way to do 'beach' and ride.

Arizona (Tucson), Florida, ...
I would not go north of santa barbara since the rains will be around and the morning temps will be in the 40F or below range in the pacific northwest.

san diego, arizona, maybe even north georgia or north carolina. id stay out of the NW until june. although bend, or might be pretty good by then. its usually pretty sunny by then. high desert = no rain.

I am north of Santa Barbara. Rain? In April? It barely rains here, and when it does, it usually is in Jan/Feb.

The only answer is Southern California. You want mostly flat and fast? We got that with the best scenery to boot (PCH). You want climbs that rival international cycling's famous grades? We got those too (Palomar and Baldy)!

You might also check out the thread in the Touring forum entitled Travelling Through the US. It is mainly about Rowan's and my relatively recent trip through the US, complete with photos etc., but anyone who has good stories or photos of travelling or touring through the US can add their stories and photos.

That thread has photos of many of the places people have mentioned here. San Luis Obispo, for example, is a beautiful area that reminded us of Victoria in Australia.

Arizona and SoCal. Not Colorado, for sure, too early for the mountains by far.

If you are looking for a supported trip, look at PacTour desert camps and Cycling Escapes.

AZ, NM, UT, NV, and So-Cal. The SW US is the only logical choice.

October is also great in the SW.

I live in northern CA (Bay Area), which is beautiful, but if I had the option for a month off of riding in April I would either go up to Marin County for road and mountain, or Santa Barbara/San Luis Obispo and stick mainly to road. Santa Barbara is my absolute favorite place to ride.
