Vintage Miyata 610 and Similar Non Top of the Line Touring Bikes Thread
I did not see a thread dedicated to these particular bikes but perhaps there's one I missed.
I saw the vintage touring bike threads
and the top of the line touring bikes various threads and have posted to some of them.
I have had a few of the top vintage tourers myself and they are terrific!
Why not a thread for the non top of the line vintage tourers that perhaps don't get as much love as the top bikes?
This thread may get little or no attention but I am putting it out there anyway.
After all, we all can't find a top of the line tourer in our size, can we?
These 2nd tier are not as widely sought after so perhaps easier to acquire?

Here's mine I've had about a month, a 1985 610 model in the 23" size.
The only original parts are the crank arms and the 44T chaining.
I've probably got right around a 100 miles on it so for and I am really enjoying the ride.

I have converted to 700c wheels
(H-Plus Son rims/105 Hubs)
and maxed out the tire size.
A true to stated size 700 x 42
barely clears on true wheels.
The derailers and shifters are 7 speed XT.
The cantilevers are the Deore XT BR-MC70 model.
Original Sugino GP crankarms with 44x38x24 rings.
I had a Nitto dirt drop stem I liked the look of better but it was a bit short so I had this 10cm threadless stem and adapter in the parts box and installed them yesterday.
I'm on the lookout for a 10cm Nitto Dirt Drop stem.

I propose that such bikes be designated "beta tourers."
I once owned a 1980 Miyata 610, which I liked but sold (sorry, no photo). I'm now overhauling a Bianchi Randonneur from about 1986 for a friend. It seems to be a pretty good bike, albeit another obvious beta tourer.

I'm happy with an '87 Trek 520 Cirrus and no need for another like it.
That said, I spotted this NICE original, bargain priced Nishiki Cresta GT on eBay. Has stump pulling gearing with sought after Suntour triple pulley Lepree.

I very seriously doubt Nashbar is high on anyone’s list as a top tier bike. Okay by me.
Made in Japan ca. 1986 from Tange 2, size 63cm.

Good thread, there are a lot of good tourers that fell somewhere in the middle.
I have a lotus eclair. It’s a great bike, one of my favorites to ride.

Are aluminum bikes allowed on this thread?
An 86' ST 500, definitely not the top of the line. A $50 spec bike I bought for flipping; not quite my size.
A '90 ST 600, technically not top of the line, but identical frame to that year's top of the line ST 1000, and with many upgrades, so...

I've got a forlorn 1982 Miyata 610 waiting for my attention as a few "top of the line" touring bikes have cut ahead in the Que.
I think its the side pull brakes on this bike that regulates it to the second tier. I do have a full set of racks for it, but I m not sure their apropriate. I'm trying to visulize what a "heavy sports tourer" looks like. Blackburn Handlebar and saddle bag with front pannier maybe?

Your Six Ten looks great.
You have posted a few MTBs you have converted for upright riding? How does this compare?

I have a Panasonic Touring Deluxe that I really like and it actually fits me a bit better than my Miyata 1000. Decisions, decisions....
No pics but I will post up soon.

The upright position is working much better for me as I've gotten older so I typically switch to upright bars with tall stem.
I have just one bike with road bars now and will probably sell it.
I've pretty much let go of my 'go fast' mindset I had when I was younger and am more into the comfort aspect.
I'm enjoying two of the Trek 950 mt bikes in my stable as well as a Schwinn Passage tourer.
I find the 610 and Passage are not as stiff as the 950 mt bike frames.
I'm a bit surprised that the 610 and Passage have a bit of flex to them for me, not the full on 'planeing' some describe on thinner wall tubing frames but definitely not as rigid as the 950's.
That said the fatter tires on the 950's add
a bit of plushness I like.
It's fun to have a number of different bikes with different ride characteristics.

How about the Giant Excursion: It came w/ Deore LX components, Racks, Fenders, Internal Wiring & a Bottom Bracket generator to Power Front & Rear Lights. You don't see them very often, but I had one pass through my hands last December. I believe it originally came w/ a flat bar, but the previous owner converted it to drops w/ Shimano Bar end shifters. A very sweet bike that I sold for $325 in less than a week.

Schwinn didn't market this one as a touring bike, even though it has Tour in the name. The long wheelbase really smooths out the bumps. I swapped to a triple and 7 speed freehub to get more gear range. Then, I got carried away swapping parts until the only original parts left were the frame and seat post. I have a NOS Schwinn Touring bag for when I want to carry a bigger load. The hubs and blinky light are from the Box O'Crap.

Another Lotus Eclair owner here. Not as plush as my Miyata 1000, but this bike loves the open road, and makes a great trail bike. The original Deore group just works, and the half-step granny setup is really fun. Not the lightest bike, but climbs like a billy goat. My current "social distancing" ride. I bought the pedal adapters off eBay from a guy in Russia. They work beautifully! Also have the original front and rear racks. This thread makes me want to go camping!

Speaking of Nishikis, I found a Cresta GT a couple of months ago after searching for an '80s tourer. I've since added a Jim Blackburn front rack and my usual VP clipless pedals and will probably add aero levers and barcons when I change the stem.
