Addiction LXXVIII

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Hananero needs a new groupset. I know it’s crazy but I am actually considering Campy Chorus as an option.

I wouldn't. We took the SPDs off the tandem and have BMX platforms now.

Are tandem riders more likely to wave at other cyclists?

Of course not. And all my other bikes and tools etc are Shimano so more likely to get Shimano. Would not be doing this for another year (or two) so plenty o’ time to ruminate.

Our bike is 340 lbs and running 37mm tires at 65 rear, about 57 front.

Not sure what the best drop bar V's are, since we have flat bar. For canti's I like vintage Shimano paper football lookin' XTs (slight possibility they might snag your stoker's heel some of they have big feet)

Not crazy at all. It would drive me nuts to not have everything on the same system though.

We’ve always owned lightweight tandems with skinny tires so I really don’t know but but I’d set the pressure same as any bike by pumping them until you get the standard 15% drop. My wife and I are running 115# for the same weight as you on 28mm tires. I’d try maybe 105# and see how it goes. If your tires are too soft in the front, the steering will be sluggish and if you’re too soft in the rear, you’ll risk pinch flats. If your rear tire is too hard, your stoker will let you know pretty fast.

It’s been a long time since we had rim brakes but we just used whatever was available. It is imperative that you keep them properly adjusted and running close. You can run out of lever quickly on downhills if you run them too wide.

They offer a 48x32 crankset now. Pair that with an 11-34 cassette and I could climb all day and still have a pretty high gear. I've put over 40,000 miles on my old Chorus parts and it still shifts pretty well.

edit: with a 34 out back I would probably be happy with the 50x34 up front even if I found myself in the Eastern Sierra Nevadas.
