Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I guess we'll have to disagree here - I've seen a lot of photos of elite IM guys who are aggressive compared to us, but not in the same league as the Martins, Cancellaras and Zabriskies.

That is precisely my point, the position triathletes adopt is less aggressive because their races are different and their bicycle legs tend to be longer. Still far more aero and faster than they would be on a regular road bicycle.

I don't think that would work for 50-100 miles. How long are the bike legs in your races?

Not really. But again, if you're doing tri bike legs that are 20-30 miles, you could be as aggressive as you want. My comments apply to longer tri guys, like 50-100+ mile bike legs.

I can't do that (yet) or at least I haven't tried.
I really wasn't in such great shape for that race, I was only a few weeks back on the bike after my DVT/PE episode. I'm confident I can get faster. To be competitive at all in the 55+ you'd have to average 25 mph or better on that particular course. I am faster on the Cervelo than I was on the Cannondale, not that the bike is faster, my position on it is better because it fits me.

I do Olympic and half ironman distances, so 25 miles and 56 miles.

It's a surprisingly comfortable position, and gets me ~25mph with my measly 200 watts.

Your position looks pretty aero. 56 mi on a TT bike is no friggin picnic. I'm not naturally that aero, I averaged 220 watts or something in that race and couldn't crack 24 mph. But I do think my position is pretty good. I think since that race I lowered my stem a notch and I may be more aero next time I do that course, and I'll also be at least 10lbs lighter which will also help.

My advice is always the same, get an Adamo saddle and jack it as far forward as possible under whatever rules you follow. Best way to get an open hip angle on a UCI legal bike.

Probably work better than Quel's position because his back is flatter. He'd be more aero if he got his hand position down though.

I love riding my BMC TT bike.

Timely thread. Pcad, if you were to take a guess, how much quicker do you think you'd be on this course with the tt bike vs your road bike given the same power output (ironman lake placid bike course) https://ironmanlakeplacid.com/course/bike/ . I'm going back and forth if it's worth buying a tt bike seeing there's a lot of climbing, descending and not a ton of flat. Thoughts?

1-2 mph faster on a TT bike. If there's descending, you'll be much faster on the descents.

Road bikes are more common at IMLP than at other IMs.
