Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Arch Pain, HotSpots, & Numb Toes - Help Please

Morning All,

I've been through the trials here, trying to resolve this problem. I have a pair of diadora cycling shoes with the spd style recessed cleat. They are fairly flat on the inside. With medium-weight socks, they are just a hair loose on my foot, but they fit fine.

When using them I experience serious arch pain in my left foot and left foot only.

So I bought some specialized brand inserts. Now, the arch pain is gone but I've got serious numb toes and hot spots. With the inserts, the shoe is a little tight on my foot, which I can imagine is causing the numbness.

I've fiddled with cleat position and think my cleats are in the right spot...ala the spindle is just under the ball of my foot.

My next question...now what?

+1. My cycling shoes are a full size bigger than my regular shoes. The specialized insert will give you arch support but also has a metatarsal button which spreads your toes out slightly to help prevent hotspots at the ball of your foot & toes. You need bigger shoes to accommodate that feature & typical foot swelling during a long ride.

They might just be too flexy. I have the exact same issues with my MTB shoes but not with my stiffer road shoes. I have the same SPD cleats as you.

Do you have high arches? Often the lack of flexibility coupled with high arches and a rigid foot causes those problems

No, actually the guy at the LBS that had me stand on the foot / arch measurer thingy said I have fairly flat feet.

custom shoes. I was having arch problems, and custom molded Rocket7's solved it. Unfortunately they're out of business, but there still is D2

Admittedly pricey, but the points where you interface the bike are good places to spend money if you have it to spend.

Do you need to walk much in your cycling shoes?

If not, switching to SPD-SL or similar pedals along with a large shoe would probably help, too. The SPD-SL road pedals have a much larger surface to push on.
