Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Am I better at Running or Cycling

For the runners and cyclist out there.

I can average 20mph over 30 miles on my own.I've been cycling for 4 years but I think that's the best I'm gonna get

But with running.I running 5k on the roads on my own and have got down to 19 minutes
and I believe I am still improving.

I'm 38 by the way,and used to run 11 sec 100m,and 52 sec 400m when I was 20

Would you say I have more potential for running or cycling

Thanks

at 38 your running days are going to be numbered... knees, ankles, and general joint pain will start to limit you in the coming years... I'm 43 and used to be like you, was able to make faster gains on foot versus bike, now you can barely get me to run more than 5k without some pretty severe joint pain in my knees and lower back... this coming from a guy who used to run 10k's and half marathons as off-season training when I played college soccer... just my experiences... but keep doing both anyway... enjoy it while you can and take advantage of it as well...

More potential running. What is your time for longer distances like 10K, 10 miles, half marathon, etc?

One reason I ride is because I can't run without injury. Do both. Your 38 and the Olympics are not in your future.

What kind of landscape? Is the area hilly or flat? Is that 19 minute 5K a 19:00 or a 19:59?

more of less, this. I can and still do run a little, however, when I'm finished I do I feel like I've been in a fight, whoel body gets sore and i never realized how rough it was on my body until I put down my first 25 mile bike ride and got off feeling very refreshed and not sore at all...

I can bike that fast for 30 given the terrain, and I can run the 5k 3+ minutes faster th an you are currently doing it, so I'd say you are better at biking. But, thats from my perspective...someone who runs a 22:00 will say, "wow, you are way better at running".

but honestly, I think you are about even

mkmartin,

If you're doing roughly 5 min/mile pace running and ride at 20 mph, you are a way better runner. 20 mph for 30 miles is nothing for someone that's ridden a few years and just takes average ability and some training miles. 5 min/mile pace is something the average runner can not achieve even with lots of training

Your running e-wang is longer than your cycling e-wang.

his pace is more like 6:15/mile (5k = 3.1 mi @19min)... still a pretty damn good pace though... doubt I could run that pace for 1 mi at this point in my life, well, without dieing at the end of it... back in my 20's while in the Army I was doing about 5 1/2 minute miles for our PT test (2 mile run), but that was 20 yrs ago and 25 yrs ago I could run a 10k in about 38 mins, but again, LONG time ago... not as good as I once was

As a runner for 33 years now 50 years old, I cycle much more now. I still run about 40 miles a week and ride about 115 a week in season on the bike. You are a much better runner than cycling. I can run a 5k in about 21:45 these days but have great endurance. I can easily ride 20mph for 30 miles given flat terrain. I still think I am a better runner over longer distances.

It is an interesting question because I can run a marathon today in maybe 3 hrs and 45 minutes but best century solo is 5 hrs 15 or about 19 mph ave. I know cyclist who can do a 5 hr century but not really ever get under 4 hrs in a marathon. Really it is specific training.

OP, with those kinds of times in both, you really need to take up swimming. You will be a very competitive age grouper Triathlete, especially if you pick up a tt bike.

I suspect you're light without a lot of power but might be a good climber. You have lots more potential in cycling if you learn to train properly.

You are bad at both running and cycling.

You should probably join a coed rec indoor soccer league or something.

I don't run.

And I don't measure my cock size by average speed. I take my w/kg and multiply by 2 and that's the size of my cock in inches.
