Sugino Track Pista vs Sugino Messenger Crank?

Pista
https://www.amazon.com/Sugino-Track-F...s=sugino+crank

vs.

RD2 Messenger
https://www.amazon.com/Sugino-Messeng...s=sugino+crank

Besides the price, what's the difference?

Would it be horrible to go with the cheaper option?

Thanks,

The Pista is a knockoff so I think that says enough about that.

Yeah...that "Pista" version has been floating around awhile but isn't made by Sugino. If you don't care about having a ****ty crankset, buy it.

But buy it for the chainring; that thing is boss.

The reason it would be horrible to go with the cheaper option is that the damn hidden chainring bolt will kill you. Literally.

I think they're both garbage. I have the RD2 and after switching to the AllCity cranks(same as Andels but different chainring) I will never use it again. In fact, if someone ask me for it I'm more than likely just give it away lol.

Hogwash. The Sugino RD2 & RD2 Messenger are perfectly fine cranksets for the money.

Exactly. The All City cranks are in that price range. They aren't anything special but they do fine for what they are, just like the RD2. Based off my experience with All City cogs and pedals, I'd get another set of RD2s before All Citys.

For a little more you can find a used Sugino 75. Now there's some beef for your dollar, and it gets you to the 144 bcd track standard as well.

The Andel/All City cranks are also true 144 bcd track cranks for the same price as the Sugino RD2, and their quality is very good. Sure, the finish on the Sugino 75 is better, but they cost 3X as much. For someone on a budget, you can't beat the Andel crank, and they fit the very common 110mm JIS size BB spindle.

I just bought some of those "fake" pista cranks from Amazon. I contacted the seller and told them they were fake and also contacted Sugino to ask if they were real.
here's my email correspondence with Sugino.

Agreed the messenger cranks are fine. Nothing too fancy nothing too shztty they are just right. Sure I am sure we would almost all rather have Super Sugino 75 with the Super Zen chainrings but at almost a grand for both, no thanks.

I am rather surprised at the "tarck pista" cranks being legit Sugino. I guess everyone has to make something that looks like crap.

I just got some RD2's in January and I think they're good cranks. If Sugino would simply polish the sides of the spider arms they'd be sooo much nicer. When you hold them in your hand the left crank seems like it's twice as nice as the right one. RD2's + Salsa chainrings (if you can find them) are an excellent combination.

Yup, ebay some Sugino, DA or other used njs cranks for the same amount. Then a lil polishing later they look better than new.

Those cranks are a ***** to deal with.... the 5th chainring bolt is located *under* the driveside crankarm.

I believe they're the same cranksets that come with virtue bikes.

Shouldn't be *that* surprising -- making both high-end/name-brand and low-end/knockoff products to be rebranded is a great way to hold more market share. Lots of companies do it.

you get what you pay for.

i would opt for used quality over new trash. we can thank ourselves for the endless spew of junk flooding the market. pre 2007 is where youll find quality.....stuff.
