Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

3alarmer, my sincere apology. I'll stay off of the playground from now on.
No harm, no foul on this end. It's not a bad place for cheap laughs and occasional entertainment, just no real great philosophical insights.

I'm prepared. I live in Portland. Teslas pass by me regularly and there are so many EV's, I'm sure they outnumber full size pickups. So I'm ready, should one of us not die of old age before you get around to me first...

Arrogance is not about waving or what you wear or ride. Arrogance is arrogance and it can be seen easily. It doesn't matter whether you are a pedestrian or cyclist or car driver. Normal people dislike arrogance. Fundamentally arrogance is related to stupidity, because people with half a brain have the ability to perceive how others see them and would not want to be perceived like that. It is this lack of perception that is inherent in arrogant individuals. Normal people do not wish to be perceived as arrogant as they would be concerned that others would value them less and may not come to their aid if it were needed. The arrogant person lives in a dream where he or she never even perceives that they might need aid or assistance. The arrogant person goes to a restaurant and unwittingly displays arrogance to the waitress, whilst being totally unable to entertain the notion that the waitress will likely adulterate their food before serving it with a nice smile! :-)

Arrogance in cyclists (or anyone) is outward manifestation of being insecure, or having developed a knowledge of self. I think there is a higher display of arrogance among cyclists / motorists etc. because you are a moving billboard. The implication is more visual presentations per minute. My term - VPM.

18 pages so far...each read with the concentration of a monk sitting cross-legged on a hilltop, eyes closed...patiently waiting for the universal harmony and enlightenment I know must come....and still nothing. So I will ask. I will speak for those of us who are afraid to, those of us who cannot or will not, here in this sacred place. I will ask, at the risk of my own safety and perhaps even my life. It must be spoken:

Does Trek make good bikes?

Damn, this thread is entertaining! Well done gents! banerjek and Dave Cutter, informative and entertaining as usual!

So get this (and this is a true story, mind).

This March, I had gone to Bhutan for an extended weekend of riding (I go twice a year - love the place and it is easy for me to get to, given where i live). I was feeling good. Had done a few days of 4hr+ rides, found a restaurant that made kick-ass chilly pork and the weather was spectacular. The country has a big riding culture, but mostly MTBs, and i encounter quite a few of them on the roads. Even though they dont look like Lance, I still dial it up to 400W and drope them, cos, like, that's the way I roll.

This time, the general feeling of all being well in the world must have gotten to me, because something unusual happened. As i crossed an MTBer coming from the other direction, I - unsolicited and even before that knave acknowledged my roadie superiority by dismounting and grovelling as I passed - gave him the slightest of nods and a finger twitch as I went by.

And get this... it was NOT reciprocated!!!

The horror, the horror. Were i anything more than a 155lb spaghetti-armed weenie, I'd try to slam all MTBers and hybrid riders (except the hotties) with my shoulder and knock them over, but since they are all mostly fatties, that wont work too well. So I shall, from now on, sneer at them.

Should I also start a thread on the MTB forum about why they dont wave?

I have found people in public bathrooms to be arrogant. I always wave whilst discharging, and not only is it not reciprocated, but no one even makes eye contact.

I'll try it in the Men's room next, and see if they are less judgmental than the folks in the Ladies'.

You can try retry this social experiment @ the Meat Packing district, or some select areas near Christopher St. Of course, your results may vary.

It's right next to the naked trampoline gymnasium with the big windows on it.

Coming the other direction were a couple of joggers who stopped abruptly, one of them yelling, "J**** F****** C****" at the top of her lungs. They clawed their way through the Hello Kitty girls with nary an apology to the girls.

I waved at them. They did not wave back.

A-holes. All joggers are a-holes.
Correct.

Harley riders have waved to me while I was on my road bike.

I once waved at a blind man by accident. No joke. (He was a pedestrian, not riding a bike. Although I should embellish the story like that to jazz it up.) Out in the boondocks where I ride I regularly get waved at my people mowing their lawns and farmers. No cows yet though.
