Yeah, there is a huge price discrepancy between the "branded" and "unbranded" integrated CF bars. That mod probably doesn't make a big difference, but it seems odd. However, it does seem to cut into the lower structural elements of the bars so I would have cut off at $30 or so.

Perhaps there was some kind of a blockage for the cable routing.

I'm thinking about building up a bike with 3 shifters, and still trying to figure out the cable routing.

So in use, are you supposed to leave the seat on the post leave it hanging out the other side from the side you're pumping on? That doesn't sound too unreasonable if you have a QR seatpost bolt. However it looks like the placement of the chuck could cause some interference between seat and tire.

Hmmm....

There are newer ones that use a hose, either at the top or the bottom of the seatpost.

That one might work if one had a new wheel with paired (or triplet) spokes.



Now, if only they had bothered to center the valve. But, perhaps they decided it was safer near the spokes.

Otherwise, removing the seatpost, then removing the seat would be a big pain. I suppose if one got to only getting a single flat every 10,000 miles or so, then one would be ok taking everything apart, especially if one usually had friends that would donate their pump.

^^^ Those wheels are highly engineered by smart people, I'm sure there's a reason why.

My parents have matching Dahon folders that have seatpost pumps as a standard feature, although they use a hose instead of just a chuck.

I don't see that as a "mod," that's damage. A chunk of carbon fiber broken off one side, but not the other. The guy didn't even admit that there was anything different or wrong, or modded or broken.

If the was struck in a manner hard enough to crack off that chunk, what else was cracked?

Why on Earth would the seller mount a 26" wheel/tire on the bike... and then state that it also includes the original 700c wheel?

No telling. It seems to still have its RD hanger. However, what are those bosses on the bottom of the chainstays?

It has a derailleur hanger, but also has vertical dropouts.

I don't see any cable stops anywhere on the bike. Not all bikes had them, but most frames that had water bottle bosses and integrated derailleur hangers had at least some cable stops.

Those chainstay bosses puzzled me too. My best guess would be Cantilever/V-Brake Bosses. But it seems like an odd place to put them.

That bike probably had disc brake mounts, but had mounted front and rear V-Brakes.

So, somewhere along the way, the bike lost its original wheels.

I wonder how effective the gear indexing is on the 9 --> 7 gear configuration.

It looks like it once was a nice MTB. $3K worth???? Aluminum frame with CF suspension and rear triangle?

Sure are. Which means it was a MTB in it's past life.

Well, except I don't see any studs on the fork, so it might mean that it's a mystery bike that used to be an mtb that got in a front end collision and has a new fork (hence the paint to match). Other than that, if it hadn't been drewed it might be worth taking out and building up into a drop bar commuter if it fit. Clamp on cable guides could get around the removal of the originals (assuming they existed, and since u-brake means mid-late 80's, they probably did), but my fear of a front end collision would say no thanks to this on. Of course, I could be mistaken and it could be something that came with a centerpull front brake.

Who buys these things? Who in their right mind would want to go 40 MPH on a $98 new Magna Great Divide? Why not start with a better donor bike with more capable brakes? I guess I should be grateful they didn't kludge up a nice vintage mtb or something.
