in any event, i got my winter beast back from the shop today. it turns out the entire rear brake from lever to caliper needed to be replaced due to faulty seals at both ends, so the repair was a little more expensive than i was expecting, but they were also able to sort out the EBB issue (at least until it slips on me again). my only (super minor) gripe: my brake levers don't match anymore. first world problems are just the worst.

all in all i'm glad i stuck with what i got. it's a 9 year old winter bike. it's not supposed to be fancy, just be able to put up with the elements, and with the rear brake and EBB now sorted out, she's once again ready for the sloppy season ahead of us.

For real. That's probably really 2.5 sets, but still, I eat brakes in the winter. The hy-rds were much better, which did make wonder if it was someting about the BB7 maybe in combination with my bike. We'll see about they hylex, now that winter is here.

Having commuted for 35+ years, I can say that this isn’t true. I have worn out rims only 3 or 4 times over my years of commuting. I’ve only worn out rims 3 or 4 times in my entire bicycling experience. And, drawing on 8 years of bicycle co-op experience where I work on the worst treated bicycles around, I can say that I don’t see a lot of worn out rims there either.
