Hey all, this is my first post. I'm not new to biking, but I took a 2-3 year break and am just getting back into the sport.

Anyway, I bought a NOS 2018 Jamis Renegade Expert on Bike Exchange last week, since it's basically become nearly impossible to shop for a bike in person (even most of the online shops are out of stock!). It was my size, full carbon and 105, disc brakes, etc, so I snapped it up.

Well, it came today. Problem is - one of the brake levers is cracked in the middle, badly enough that it basically cracked open, and is blocking the smaller shifter from moving. Also, the chain was jammed between the inner ring and the frame, and left some nasty paint scrapes and chips on the finish. They're mostly hidden behind the cranks, but still very annoying. I reached out to the seller, but haven't heard back yet.

What do you guys think is a reasonable compensation for this? I'm not sure what I should be asking for, be it some money back, or a new brifter, or some touch up paint? I'm not really sure. Either way - very annoying! Advice on how I should proceed would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Question for the OP: If you purchased a clothes washer on-line and it was delivered with damage, would you find a clothes washing internet chit-chat forum and ask the members what to do?

As I said, I have actually already contacted the shop. I'm just waiting for a response and am reaching out to a (supposedly) likeminded community to see if anyone has experienced a similar thing and if they had any advice on how to deal with it. So sorry if I inconvenienced you.

I these times you might be better off looking for a discount rather than a non-available replacement.

How much is fair compensation for a 105 hydraulic shifter? Also - is it possible to just buy the brake lever bit and not the entire assembly? All I can find on "The Google" is the entire assembly, usually with the caliper included. If I could just get the actual lever I'd imagine it would be a lot cheaper...

When the seller contacts you, it might be nice to have repair costs already prepared.
I suspect this is the Brifter you are looking for.
Don't forget the cost of installation, including bar tape.
As for frame damage, only you can judge what it is worth to you.

This being NOS, you're not likely to get a replacement, but I'd ask the seller if they'd trade for a similar bike. Nobody needs to lose big in that case; shipments are insured. And, have you contacted the shipper about a damage claim?

In any case I'd want to return it, even if only for a refund.

Who was the Shipper,? Was it Insured? have you contacted them?
did you take documentation pictures of the un opened box and many more to show it's packing and the damage to the contents ?

This is an example of the negative side to forums, There is always at least one member that has nothing constructive to say, Then to continue on by wanting an answer to this question in another post is really uncalled.for. but in today's world it seems to be more the rule than the exception.

Depending on how it was shipped, what the insurance coverage amount was.will help in your decision if you want to keep the bike. Take pictures of the damage to the bike and the container it was shipped in along with any other requirements the shipper and the freight company may require. Try not to get in the middle between the two. You are the recipient and shouldn't be responsible for doing extra leg work to receive compensation.
Let them come to you with a resolution. At that point you can counter, accept or decline the offer. Bottom line you need to be made whole in the transaction.
I just had a similar situation that I was able to rectify. Good Luck.
