SRAM Red 10 speed question

I’ve got a SRAM 10 speed cable brake setup (2015 vintage) on my Boone that I currently run a 50/34 crank and 11-28 cassette. It has the short cage der. I’d really like to run at least a 32 tooth cassette, could live with a 30. I’ve not found a reference on the capacity of a short cage der. Can My short cage run a 50 drive with a 30 cassette? Or better yet, is it possible to swap the cage on my Red derailleur to a medium to accommodate the 32 tooth cassette?

I use this bike as a road bike but we have some pretty steep hills and I’m old...

Bikes: Too many. Giant Trance X 29, Surly Midnight Special get the most time.

That RD is rated to a max 28t, you could probably run a 30t out of spec and it'd work OK, 32 would be a real roll of the dice. You may have unacceptable chain wrap on a 30 or 32t cassette if you cross chain towards small/small. If you want, you can use any 10 or 11 speed Sram road RD, or any 10 speed Sram MTB derailleur to get the gearing you need.

Also consider that switching to a subcompact crank may be a better solution if you don't need 50/11. 32/28 is lower than 34/30, after all.

I can confirm that 50/34 x 12-30 works on my Red drivetrain, but it's at the limit of its tolerance and ymmv depending on your frame/RD hanger geometry.

My guess (no experience) is that a 30 might work. Maybe look around for a 10 speed WiFli rear mech (Red or Force, might not see any difference). I run a Force 10 spd WiFli with Force 22 yaw FD and Red 22 cranks under Force 10 spd shifters.

I don't think that was made. Force is/was. (I have one NIB if you're interested)

I dealt with that situation by adding a roadlink. Works well except for a bit of slack in small/small, which I don't use anyway. the set up is also lighter than Force medium cage.

11/34 gives more useful gears than 11/28 IMO, more time in the big ring, fewer double shifts.
