Classic Glenn.
A clearly limited solution followed up by a hot take that is just as much miss as hit in application.

Do a search on bicycle and let me know the percentages.

On Long Island there are 597 "bicycle" and 56 "vintage bicycle". So 10% sounds pretty big, but look at what's being sold and it's many old beaters that people call "vintage".

Here's an example.

I only buy if I think the bike isnt directly stolen and do that by getting a background story. If it sounds off, I wouldnt offer. Its pretty simple.
There is no way to know if the person you are buying from bought it stolen, but thats the story for most anything in life. Deal with what you know, which is the person in front of you. If they seem sketch, then dont buy.

I've only purchased on used bike and the seller had the receipt and I know the store he bought it from.

I spent a bit of time the last few months looking at Craigs List, looking at the ads for used higher end bikes, specifically Litespeeds. What I noticed is that the ads broke down into two categories - one where the owner obviously knew the bike, the age, described the components, the size, etc. And the other category was basically, "Litespeed titanium bike. Large" and nothing about anything else. Not knowing anything about a high end, expensive bike suggests you didn't buy it.

Now, do I know for a fact that the "Litespeed titanium bike. Large" was stolen? Of course not. But I know whom I'd buy from.

I look for a coherent explanation of ownership and reason for selling-

either a cycling who knows about the bike, or a believable scenario if otherwise.

My current primary road bike was bought used on Craigslist, and included the original sales receipt.

I can appreciate that. But, usually, you don't have the choice: there is only one local bike that matches up with your very specific search. And you may never know how the owner acquired it. I always ask for the history of the bike. Sometimes it's well known, sometimes, not.

Or, in my case, none. Which is why I don't own a Litespeed now.

To be fair, I was looking for ONE model, from only one or two years, in what turns out to be a less common size.

Not everyone uses the "vintage" tag for his vintage bike. Now do one on "suntour." Then, "univega." Then "531." Then "motobecane." Etc, Etc. Add them all up. Have fun.

Here's an example.
On the flip side, (pun intended) there are probably just as many that you would consider "vintage" that do not use that word anywhere in the ad.
For example or local "Eastside guy" who flips lots of nice bikes without using the word vintage.

Personally, if i were selling a vintage "classic" bicycle, i'd most likely contact the local clubs with better odds of finding a knowledgeable buyer who knows what it's worth.

But who sells bikes... N+! baby.

My other interest is vintage American watches. People don't usually call them vintage, unless they are a dealer.

I thought they were water pumpers? I had a 67 Camper Bus for 13 years, got so I could take the engine out in 20 minutes, (because I did it so much) gave it to one of my sons who ran it into the ground. sold it 22 years ago for $350, still lives a good life on the California Coast, and worth a bit more than $350 today.

Ya think Split campers , even ones in poor condition go for well over $10,000 and nice ones go in the $30,000s.

I bought mine new.... it's worth a bit more now.

I just picked up a set of Mavic 27" wheels from a guy on Craigslist a week ago and when we met, at his house, I could tell he was someone who knew bikes and had been working on them for years. We got to talking for some time about bikes. I have had good experiences from Craigslist, both buying and selling. I see a lot of new bikes there and wonder if they are stolen, no explanation as to why they are selling a "new" bike, and that is a red flag.

But a lot of vintage bikes are just "old ten speeds." Many are fine bikes and there is a market for them, but they lack the cachet needed to be considered classic. A lot of these bikes have had many owners. I figure a bike from the 70s has at least a 50% chance of having been stolen at some point in its life.

What are the odds the seller has the original receipt for that bike?

It's okay to buy stolen goods as long as the price is below your "comfort" level?

No, the risk is if it's stolen and take by the police you're only out $50.

Is that a torsion bar Beetle? Or a MacPherson strut Super Beetle? Can't tell with the bike there, but I'm leaning toward the former.
