Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Urban Assault Race kicks off in LA!

Hailed as "The Amazingly Fun Bike Race", the Subaru Urban Assault Race is a cross between a bike race and scavenger hunt created for all types of athletes of all ages. Teams of two race their bikes to checkpoints all over the city, where they complete fun, crazy challenges. Some of the race challenges include adult big wheels, water sports, inflatable slip N slides, and brainteasers. The Urban Assault Races are hitting the streets of 7 US cities in 2006 with the first event in Los Angeles, CA on March 26th.

Now in it's 4th year, the Subaru Urban Assault Race has become one of the biggest bike race series in the US. It's growth is due to its popularity with first-time racers. "Although we created this event to be a cool change of pace from the same old road and mountain bike races, the Subaru Urban Assault Race has become huge with the 99% of cyclist that have never raced before", explains race director, Josh Kravetz. A lot of the fun is the team element. Racers must complete the race in teams of two: in Co-ed, Male, Female, or "Family" pairs.

The race is about 20-25 miles and contains 10 checkpoints that contain crazy obstacles. "The obstacles are so much fun - they're really what this event is all about!" says Holly Frost a 3 year participant. The fun doesn't stop at the finish line - participants receive Chipotle burritos and New Belgium beer at the after party. Prizes are unusual and fun focused - the top team takes home a pair of fat-tire cruisers. The Subaru Urban Assault Race will hit the streets of the following cities: Los Angeles, CA (3/26), San Diego, CA (4/30), Dallas, TX (5/28), Ft. Collins (6/17), Austin, TX (6/25), Denver, CO (7/30), and Boulder, CO (8/27).

The purpose of the event is to get people out riding their bikes around their city and to promote an active and healthy lifestyle. Not only for adults, the race also contains the "Family Division" - a reduced distance race for kids (ages 7-12) and their parents/guardians. The race benefits local and national charities that promote an active, healthy lifestyle such as the Challenged Athletes Foundation. Registration and more race information is available at

It seems like when I'm on my bike in LA that I'm utterly despised by every driver --- especially the ones in Land Rovers, Jaguars and BMW's.

I predict this event turns into anything from a minor fiasco to a full scale bloodbath.

The Subaru Urban Assault Race has been produced in 3 different cities with 5 races in 3 years. We've never had an incident with a car hitting a bike. Riders who break traffic laws and receive a ticket are disqualified, so participants are usually pretty tame.
Most do the race simply for fun - and are quite aware of the safe routes to take. Most of the major roads are off-limits as well.
It's a really fun event!
