Need help route planning in Mexico.
I'm helping a friend plan a route across Mexico and could use some help from anyone who may have done this route or is familiar with that area. He is in Baja now (after doing the Transam and west coast routes) he is considering continuing south in Baja, ferry over to the mainland and cross Mexico to the southern tip of Texas, picking up the southern tier. Could use a little help, thanks.

He wouldn't be in the border area, look at the map of Mexico, tip of Baja is almost the middle of the country. Then draw a line to the southern tip of Texas and you can see that route is nowhere near the border region.

Mexico's States - How Safe Is Mexico
Of course, those are big states, and the danger zone could be right up against the US border...
It claims northern Baja is safe in tourist areas, and southern Baja is quite safe.

I've toured in central & southern Mexico and had no problems at all, but riding from Mazatlan to Matamoros doesn't sound like a brilliant idea. That route would take you through remote desert areas in various Mexican states where cartels are quite active.

Bikes: Surly LHTD with a YAK trailer. I may have to ditch the trailer and go to panniers but I'll give it a try and see what happens.

I don't think anybody could lure me south of the border into Mexico for ANY amount of money.

You can't get to Texas from Mexico without crossing the border region. I've lived and travelled Mexico for 30 years and would be comfortable doing that trip but would be sure to do the border area early in the day.

+1. Those days are over, dude. With the cartels and whoever else kidnapping rich gringos for ransom mixed with a government where corruption is the rule, you are literally kissing your *** goodbye. And for what? Aren't there plenty of places to ride in the US and Canada? And isn't it dangerous enough here, north of the southern border, to satisfy a whim for adventure?
