A Gitane Hosteler from about 1968. High tensile steel frame, steel rims, and a steel cottered 3 ring crank. The flamboyant paint is so-so on one side and lousy on the other side. I made it rideable as soon as I got it - and it actually rides very well (it's my size). I broke it down and cleaned lots of parts, and now have it mostly back together. It is in the "when I get around to it" queue now.

Bikes: Wow, where to start? A collection of 1980's and early 90's road, touring, and MTBs from the likes of Trek, Schwinn, Cannondale, Fuji, Miyata, Univega, Panasonic, and GT. It has gotten rather out of control.

The old stag head rear derailleur on my '84 Miyata 1000 is basically pooched now, any recommendations on a replacement?
I have actually been playing with the idea of throwing a modern triple groupset on the bike since everything is original and will have to be replaced sooner rather than later-----I think a Campy Record triple group would be great, anyone here tried that out on a touring bike?

@jet sanchEz If you’re looking for “period-ish correct” Suntour XC (not XC Sport or Pro or Comp or anything- just plain ol’ “XC.” That was the TOTL ATB group for 85/6.).
If you’re not worried about being sorta correct, but want excellent performance and still be “vintage;” the Suntour XC 3 pulley is about my favorite for wide range gearing. It shifts great, looks kooky-cool and it wraps more chain than anything.
If you want Shimano that’s “vintage,” but has great performance and has a touch more modern style (and SIS compatible) The “Deore” MT-60 and Deore DX MT-62 are excellent- as are the Deore XT M732 and M735. IMO- the 735 dominates this group.
If you don’t care about Shimano- the Suntour XC Pro and XC Comp are about as good as ATB rear derailleurs got for that time.
And if you want to throw stupid money at your bike- the Dura Ace 7803 is the finest “classic” looking RD ever.

Well I can't take much credit for this as it came to me this way but I took it even further with the 24 x 38 granny and 53 x 12 downhill.
It got me around Crater Lake with no walking and 44 mph on the free speed sections.

I was getting my Voyageur ready to sell, so I swapped out the bar-end shifters, saddle, and tires with some generic components. Took some pics last weekend and now I'm not so sure I want to part with it

A Miyata 912 wouldn’t be normally considered a “touring bike”, but with Gugificazione! applied to my ‘79 it works really well with a front load for credit card touring. Final picture was from last Spring’s Tour of the Willamette Valley with fellow C&V-ers. Yes, I was carrying more than needed, even for the very chilly weather, and wished I’d brought less when we encountered big hills. But I wanted to see how well it would work as a “travel bike” - splendidly! Thanks again for the fabulous work, @gugie!

The answer depends on each individual frame and the history from how it was originally fabricated to how it has been handled thru the years.
Something left outside for 25 years straight then toured on might work great or might rust thru at a joint.
Something kept indoors for 25 years when not in use and cleaned sometimes will perform just as reliably as when it was new.
