Wheelsets that will fit my hybrid?

Hi guys,

I'm potentially in the market for a new set of wheels for my 2017 Marin Fairfax SC1 hybrid bike that I use for daily commuting. My bike has 700c wheels, uses rim brakes, has a rear axle width of 135mm, 8-speed Shimano style cassette and I would prefer a wheelset drilled for Schrader valves as I have some extra Schrader tubes that I don't want to go to waste. I've checked out a few online stores and shops near me and haven't found anything suitable. Do any of you fine folks have any recommendations? I live in Canada (Toronto to be more specific). Thanks in advance!!

I only know of 1 wheelset that fits your requirements. I have bought 3 pair in the last year because it seems nobody - and I mean NOBODY - has a 700C rim with a 135mm rear axle that is rim brake compatible. I've looked, trust me.

I bought 2 sets last year that were drilled for Schrader valves and 1 set this year that is drilled for Presta only. You'll need rim tape as these don't come with any.

  • 29" (700C) rims
  • 22mm inner width
  • 9-speed cassette compatible
  • 135mm rear axle spacing
  • Rim V-Brake brake compatible
  • Disc brake compatible
  • Robust
  • Come with F & R skewers
  • Reasonably priced

P.S. If anyone knows of a wheelset other than what I posted that meets the OP's requirements, PLEASE POST LINKS as I'm interested too. Thanks.

These types of wheels are still pretty widely available, at least in the United States. Even on Amazon. Here is a rear wheel that meets the need, with a Shimano hub and Weinmann rim. This appears to be the matching front wheel. These are both 36-hole wheels that should be good for commuting. Jenson USA also has a number of options on its website. I'm very surprised that your local bike shop either doesn't have or can't order in a set of wheels.

Velomine has many QR wheels with 135mm rear suitable for rim brakes:
Silver Heavy Duty Velocity NoBS 700c 36h Hybrid Wheelset [14363] - $149.00 Velomine.com : Worldwide Bicycle Shop, fixed gear track bike wheelsets campagnolo super record vintage bike
Velocity Chukker 29er Wheels Shimano Deore 36h M590 non-disc [66885] - $199.00 Velomine.com : Worldwide Bicycle Shop, fixed gear track bike wheelsets campagnolo super record vintage bike
and others. The ones I linked are drilled for Presta valve. They also have some wheels built with disc hubs and rim brake suitable rims. Those will work as well.

Man, Canadian Amazon is so limited compared to US. Thankfully seems like they ship to Canada. Thanks for the reply!

Have you checked MEC? Saw a whole bunch that's been marked down recently, but unsure if these were rim brakes or disc compatible

I recently completed a pretty comprehensive search for (relatively) inexpensive replacement wheel sets for hybrids (135mm rear spacing).

My criteria were:
-- 32 spokes minimum
-- Wheel sets
-- 9 speed freehub
-- Rim Brakes
-- 18mm minimum internal width

I don't have any comments about the quality of any of the wheels or the stores themselves. I ended up getting a screaming deal off Craigslist, so I didn't end up buying any of these.

I'll just dump the list of URL's here, if that's OK:

Yeah, I did. Unfortunately they didn't have anything that seemed to fit the requirements for my bike

Wheels meeting these criteria are not at all difficult to source. You could easily have your LBS order in appropriate rims, and hubs, and have something built.

Alternatively, you could look to a 'traditional' touring-oriented source, such as St John Cycles in the U.K. and order. Here's just one example: https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/wheelswh...hubs-in-black/

Again, though, approach any of the more general (not 'high-end/racing') LBSs in Toronto and I'm sure they could fix you up with no problem.

Skiis and Biikes is another source, although I personally hate their website as it's hit or miss when it comes to searching. There's place called Royal Distrubuting out in Whitby that has a online catalogue, I was planning on buying my bike there before but ended up buying from a LBS instead. You could possibly source out parts there too as I know they sell many bikes with your rim preferences.

Good luck!

Thanks for your help! I found a place called Urbane Cycle in Toronto that carries wheels that seem like they'd be compatible with my bike, fortunately I think I will go there when the time comes to get them.

Consider building your own wheels to your own specs.
