I am considering getting a trek dual sport lady model. I would like to update the tires to Schwalbe marathon plus tour tires, because the are puncture resistant. I would like to get them in 47 mm width, or wider. Can that be done? I am looking at a 2018 or newer model. I also want to add some hebie flat mudguards and a luggage rack.

As a side note to the above, I started another thread with questions about going tubeless (I know very little about that). I've pretty much decided to go that way when the time comes. I've got my choices narrowed to two tires, both Schwalbes, one their G-on allround and the other theri Marathon Almotion. I'm not advocating for tubeless one way or the other but do a bit a research about it you might like what you read... or not!

I just purchased a FX Sport 4 Womans, and I'm so excited to get it today (thanks to many of the contributors here for unwittingly helped me to make my decision). I can't post a picture yet because I don't have 10 posts LOL. But while at first I was a little disappointed with the color choices, in the end I think the current colors of these bikes are really sleek looking. It is a plain canvas that I can personalize myself. The official color is: Matte Anthracite (which is a mat gray) with teal highlights. Maybe it is a honeymoon phase I'm in, but I wouldn't change a thing on the color choice as I think anything bright would get tiresome over time.

Congrats, it is a very nice bike, and now you have heaps of adventures in front of you.

2016 ds 8.4
Up a pretty good size hill that's kind of sandy
New to me, actually new bike The old boy I got it from rode it twice and put maybe 6 miles on it. But I'm enjoying it and ride at least a little everyday.
Far end of an out and back trip....

That bag seems to be rubbing on the rear tire. Did you mount it this way on purpose? It's supposed to go under the saddle. You can move the light and reflector down to make space. There's plenty of seat post exposed.

No it came that way it was actually about a quarter inch from the tire. I rode it that way for sometime then one day took a good look at it and realized that it wasn't correct .....

Question
I am currently looking at a used Trek 8.3 DS (2016, Green). What would be a good price for this bike if it is in good shape?
Thanks
Chris

Just got the red 2016 8.4 above in August with little to no use for $ 375. Came with a bottle cage, tire pump, spare tube and tire tools.

I like the bike, I've put quite a few miles on it since August. With the 700 x 38s that are on it it doesn't go over the sand like I'd like it to. But there are only a couple places I ride that have sand. Mostly ride on the road, it's reasonably desolate where I'm at. Haven't changed anything on it yet, only small tweaks to the saddle and handle bars.
We're getting our share of snow and ice lately and was wondering about wider tires. The neighbor has a Giant ATX with 27.5 x 2.1s that I know fit the DS 8.4 perfectly on the front and fit the back also, it just has a different set of cogs. Thinking about a set similar to those for the snowy weather we've got.

Just rereading your post, what 2.0 tires are you using. That is one thing I need is wider tires. I'm off road a little, as our driveway is a bit soft with loose gravel and sand..I'm not walking it out to the road....

In 29x2.0, I recommend the Schwalbe Hurricane for a general all-purpose tire. It's not too heavy, but not too light, either. It's available pretty inexpensively. It has a smooth center tread for silent rolling on the road, and some light tread/side lugs for extra traction off road. I find it to be a very nice light-duty all surface tire. I have 19mm wide (internal width) rims, and they're exactly 51mm edge-to-edge (on the side lugs), inflated to about 50 psi. I'm running them on a Giant Roam, and really enjoy them.

Mmm, like the price, not sure there's enough clearance on the 8.4 DS for a 52 mm tire. Anyone else have any input on if they'd fit.

This is where sizing is tough...and I like to post actual measurements when available. 2" = 58mm wide, if it's absolutely true to size, but we know that most tires are not true to nominal size. And, frustratingly, even though Schwalbe call it a 29x2, the ERTRO measurement is 50x622 (50mm diameter casing, on 622mm rim). That's very much not a 2" tire, but that's become the norm.
On your specific bike, what is the clearance between the chain stays near where the shoulder (side lugs) of the tread, would be? If it's about 50mm, and you think an actual 51mm tire would be too wide, you could look at any of a number of 47mm tires (they'll be marked 700x47 or 47-622). I know Schwalbe and Continental make a few in this size, plus others as well. Schwalbes are generally pretty true to the ERTRO size (a 50-622 is going to be close to 50mm wide, and a 47-622 is going to be close to 47mm wide), but Continental is often a fair bit smaller even than the ERTRO size. If your actual clearance is about 50mm, then a 45-47mm tire might be good (more selection in 45mm wide probably).

Worked a treat, only not good for very muddy conditions.
Minimal clearance but enough to not get into too much trouble
Versus standard LT1 on a DS 8.3

I'll do some measureing in the morning. Lots of good information here, thanks a bunch.....

@limbot, what is the actual inflated width on those Kenda Small Block 8s? They look nice on your DS!
