Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Need someone to train with at 2am: Jacksonville Fl.

I live in the Julington Creek area and am looking for someone to train with early in the morning. Due to my unique work schedule and home life, I can't cycle during the day and I know that if I use the trainer at home in the garage, I will get bored with it and stop altogether. I'll be riding around 2:30-3:00am and will be sticking to the more lit roads, i.e. Race Track Rd, Bartram Park, etc. The main incentive to ride with someone else is based on the whole "safety in numbers" philosophy and the fact that I can't imagine I'm the only one out here with this sort of work schedule. If you're interested in joining me, send me a PM. ~ Tut

Seems like prime DUI time, even on well lit roads. Don't mean to be a downer, but this sport is dangerous enough.

One of the main reasons for the "safety in numbers".

But I wouldn't be doing any moderately populated roads though. Maybe even bike paths.

I'm not sure numbers count for much when riding at bar time.

I'm not sure safety in numbers helps when you're cycling with drunk drivers. In fact, it might make things worse.

Read my post back, and I didn't understand it. I meant that people don't pick on people in groups as often. Then again, things could be different while under the influence...

I'm a firm believer in, "when your number is called, it's time to go." I could easily get hit walking across a sidewalk or get killed at work. I'm just tired of getting dropped on group rides where I know I could be doing better if I rode more often. The plan isn't to ride during the weekends since I'll have daytime group rides to join, but during the middle of the week when I know I could get some good training in. VeloGator is too far away and the idea is to find someone nearby with a similar schedule as mine. No one in their right mind is going to wake up and drive 20-30 min to go riding for an hour or so in the middle of the night. I'm looking for someone in the neighborhood. I can't be the only one in the area that has crazy work hours... (I might be the only one motivated to ride at night though).

I know a tri-fellow who works the asian financial markets and keeps odd hours. Lives off of BP Blvd. I'll ask him if he rides at that time...

Not really enough ride time to make it worth it, in my opinion. Better, and safer, to crank hard on a trainer.

I wish you luck..and no, I won't get up and come across the river and join you.

I think during the week nights at that time, you should be OK..and you have all of those new roads with nice shoulders around Bartram Trail/210.

I'm assuming that you have lots of flashy thingies on your bike to alert drivers?

Sorry Nachoman, I meant that I'd be starting around 2:30-3:00am. I agree, a half hour workout wouldn't really cut it.

Yeah, send ur tri-friend a message about riding. It might work!

I've seen one guy out there riding once or twice in the middle of the night and he has all sorts of lights on his kit and bike. You can't miss him for one second. It's almost eye-numbing.

Perhaps my first step should be to just get out there one night and see how it goes.

^^^ All I know is that I saw a bunch of lights flashing. I couldn't tell what kind of bike was on the road. I was impressed to say the least. Someone riding late at night shows true dedication to the sport in my opinion.

I just got back from a run. It's almost the only decent time to train without the heat anyway.

I ride at night all the time down by NAS JAXS. It feels safer just due to decreased traffic. I'm not up that late though.

^^^ That's too bad you're not riding that late over there by NAS. I work on that side of town and could leave my bike at work.
