I've been using my phone to track how long I take as well as all the other stats that the apps on my phone tell me about my ride. I'm not really sure what my point is by doing it. I guess just out of curiosity and to maybe see how much I've improved (hopefully) in the future.

If you do track your commute with a phone, why phone and what app do you use?

I've been trying different ones on my android phone. So far I like My Tracks best, but Softrace is cool because other people can race you and try to beat your time.

Trimble Allsport. Pretty cool in that it uploads ride data automatically and syncs with Face Book so friends and family can keep up with my rides.

I do sometimes - not really sure why as I rarely save the data and only occasionally look at it ... but I'm using GPSLogger on my Blackberry.

it's not like I don't know where I went, but I love having the daily record of how many miles I went and how long it took. have cut 15-20m off of a 13m commute in the past year by keeping an eye on it.

I have used a few apps with my iphone, but the GPS apps use up the battery so much, I cannot make my 40 mile commute (round trip) and be able to use my phone that day one one charge. I have gone back to my Garmin...it is more reliable anyway.

I've also got a Droid and have used both My Tracks and SportsTrackLive.

Currently SportsTrackLive is my tool of choice.

Garmin GPSMAP76CsX. I chose this GPS over a bicycling specific model so I could have one that would serve double duty on the bikes or in the canoes and kayaks. It gives me more information than I really want to see, the only thing it doesn't give me on the bikes is cadence.

Really it's just a fun gadget. I can ride or catch fish without it and I haven't kept up my bicycling or fishing logs in years, so don't need it to record data.

I did that once to get my definitive mileage, out of curiosity. Otherwise, I don't carry GPS on my commute, what's the point? I's a short route and I know it all plus all possible detours. I used Garmin GPSMap 60GSx.

Garmin Edge 500. My route doesn't change much, but it does change some. No big deal, but it's so simple to snap it on the bike. So... Why? I say, why not?

Cyclemeter for iPhone. Just for fun; I already have my phone so I just turn it on and chuck it in the bag. I used to have a computer but left it off after service because I really didn't use it.

Bonus use: I let it send updates to a twitter account (a separate, private one I use for these sorts of notifications). When I stopped to fix a flat my wife magically showed up without me doing anything because she saw I'd been in the same spot for a while. Also, helps her know when to have dinner ready.

I use an Oregon 550t ( great kayaking GPS! ) and SportTracks.

I like being able to get reports showing how much time I spent cycling ( or hiking, or ... ) per month, how many miles, etc.

I know my commute very well and it's not all that long, but I just find it interesting to compare my time, speeds etc... on different days and conditions.

Not having to mount a bike computer is also a good reason for using it that I hadn't though of before. Less clutter on the bike is a good thing for me.

I just discovered a Tracker app that came with my phone that I can use to record distance, speed and time (it might also record position). It's primarily made for jogging but should work for cycling as well. I'm going to start using it for tomorrow's commute.

I have a Sony Ericsson C905a, so any other apps I need to find will have to be java. I haven't made much effort to look for a proper app, but I get the impression apps for java phones may be minimal.

That's was my question a couple years ago. I'm not a competitive racer training for the TdF, so I simply gave up all forms of data collection regarding my riding. I don't miss it one bit. My feeling is, life is complicated enough, why do I need to measure and justify something that to me is purely enjoyable. My road riding buddies think it's blasphemy. But even with all the super GPS cadence power meters and crap, they dont' seem to be enjoying themselves any more because of it, and they aren't getting anywhere closer to the TdF either. So the cyclo-computers are collecting dust in the parts bin.

Good point. I think that's why I like being able to do it with my phone's gps. I'm going to have my phone with me anyways, so if I'm curious I can turn the app on. If I don't feel like it, hey, I just leave the app off. Either way, I don't have a bike computer cluttering up my bike.
