Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New bike or just groupset.....

I am pondering buying a new road frame, I am riding a 2009 tarmac pro sl, it's a great bike, I have no complaints. I have DA 7800 on it and a set of zipp 404 clinchers and Mavic Ksyrium ssc. Would I see a difference in upgrading the frame? I was thinking of maybe just getting an Ultegra 6700 groupset or maybe pick up a deal on DA 7900. Money is not very tight, but I don't want to spend money and not see a noticeable difference.

Experience and opinions appreciated and taken with a grain of salt, thanks!

Based on what you have, I can't see any good reason to spend the money. 7900 or 6700 may even be a downgrade. If you absolutely have to spend the money, buy something nice for your wife.

Thanks Halfspeed, that's what I was thinking, unfortunately though, I probably have to change the shifters, they are pretty scratched up, but I'll probably leave it at that then......

If you have the dough, buy another bike for kicks and to scratch the itch. I have heard nothing but praise for 7800, and been told that Shimano has been trying to make a group that nice since. Awesome frame as well.

I have DA7800 on the work bike and Ult6700 on my CAAD10 - I like them both, but would never take-off DA7800 to replace with Ult6700...

If your shifters are getting tatty, just buy new ones.

Also, a freshen-up - good service, new cables, etc might be enough to get you re-motivated with the bike.

cheers

I love my 7800's too. In fact I'm always on the lookout for 7800's being sold. I love the clean look they have.
Don't bother, just keep saving for a new bike that really catches your eye.

7800 is such a good group. If you could go 9000 that might be worth considering but you'd also need to make sure your hubs could accommodate 11sp.

Do I dare suggest what I think might give the best performance upgrade?

Keep it. I totally regret the day I sold my 7800 group set.

so long story short - buy an SL4 frame and move your parts over. yes, the SL4 is a huge upgrade.

The 7800 crankset is a thing of beauty - worthy of any bike museum.

I'd search high and low for some NOS 7800 shifters. NOTHING works better.

caloso, is that you were going to recommend?

I wouldn't upgrade a frame without a complete new group nor would I replace main components unless they are broken or worn.

I've got a bike each with DA 7800 and DA 7900. I like the 7800 much better. I'd either go with a new frameset as suggested above, or look into DA 9000 or Ultegra 6800.
