Heaven, my Motobecane it went.
My Grand Jubile was killed today by the bumps on Burke Gilman Trail. Or may be it was the powerful Walmart cables I put on her that snapped the chain stay when I shifted. I don't think my weight or the accident she involved in earlier this year had anything to do with it. Luckily I was riding with my wife, so I was able to steal her bike and made her walk 16 miles back to the parking lot. Just kidding.

No! No! No!
You were spinning along up a hill in the 53X11 cooling down after your sub 3 hr Century Tempo ride when you decided to sprint the last 200 meters up the 22% grade you were on. As you dialed it up to 600 Watts and your heart rate approached 80 bpm, your chain stay exploded as you passed a rider on Trek that you later learned was Alberto Contador.
May your Moto rest in peace.
EDIT: That will probably buff right out...........................

If it's worth it to you, you could probably have a competent frame builder braze a new chainstay, or atleast a new dropout with longer tangs.
Glad you made it through unscathed.

I'd try for the repair option. Too nice a bike to waste.

What really stinks is - with the break there, you can't even chop the rear triangle off to make a stool out of it.

Whoever brazed that dropout probably overheated it, a-la Benotto bottom bracket/seat tube.
Stool Huh? You got a picture?
Forgot to mention something really funny. After I pointed out the stay broke, the first thing that came out of my wife's mouth was "you got duct tape?". I swear she didn't learn that from me.

In a nutshell:
That sucks.
Sorry, bud.
If you don't want to fix it, at least don't toss it out: Someone in C&V would love to fix it up, I'm sure, and try a hand at brazing if nothing else.

I can't see why anyone want a broken frame. It is a Vitus 172 and not 531. I thought about cutting the tubes to save the lugs for future use but the tubes are metric. I am keeping the fork for another project and the Swiss threaded BB also. The frame is 57cm.

You could probably sell it in 5 minutes in Seattle if you decide not to ride it yourself. It would be a shame not to keep it on the road in some form.

Uhm, have you ever read this forum?
It's steel, therefor infinitely repairable. No reason at all to throw that away.
