Vintage mountain bike ID?
picked up this all chrome,made in japan ealy mtb today shimano date codes on derailleurs give me 1984.serial number 180095.Have any of you ever seen that fox logo? Oldtimer i bought it off did not have kids so it may be original.

It does look like my old Mongoose,1985, but the seat stays and fork are different
It may be a mid-80's Diamondback but again, the fork looks different.

I was going to say Ross, one of the "Mt." bikes like Mt. Hood. But the seat stay caps are an oddball for sure....
I've actually got one of those Mt. Hood (or whatever was the better one, with Deore) in my attic, it came from Ross with the shoulder carry strap bosses. Still not sure what the hell to do with it yet. Chrome is in really great shape.

I've never seen that model of Norco before. It looks more like the Kuwahara Shasta on the same page. I've got 84 and 85 Norco Bigfoots to compare to.
Norco's generally had the bi-plane fork crown, the seat stay caps are quite different and the chain hanger is an outlier. My 84 has a BMX bull moose .833 stem while the 85 has a standard 1 inch.

I thought I was getting close with this Raleigh Teton, but the seat tube and binder bolt are higher on your mystery bike. The rear canti hanger is different too.

The DB and the Raleigh are off, Raleigh has crimped seat stay caps at the cluster, DB Ascent looks like it's flat, not scalloped.
That scalloping is pretty unique. Older 80s era Stumpys had those too, but it's less of a match on the rest IMO. Here are some more close-up pictures of that mid-80s Norco Conquest linked above, after I did some digging on Bottledale999's Flickr page. Dropping here for posterity.

Side question - are those sliding seat posts (see pics I just posted) worth much of anything? I've got one in a bin I've been meaning to sell. Seemed a little gimmicky, but here lately I keep seeing them on all kinds of higher-end vintage MTBs.
