Panasonic DX 4000
I just bought this lovely old Panasonic dx4000 because I felt sorry for it - lonely in a second hand store at the end of row of flashy, low end mtb's. I just wanted to take it home and clean it up!
I was hoping to ride it but unfortunately it's too big for me and I'll have to sell it at some point.
The serial number makes it an April 1981 model, with full Shimano 600 arabesque and the paint is in great shape - bike looks like it was stored for years in a basement; yellowing oil, covered in dust on the components. Araya 27inch rims are all but true. The frame and fork are both labeled Champion Tange No2. I haven't started the cleanup yet - I plan to replace the original bar tape with a similar cloth, change the seat and replace the rotten hoods.
Are these panasonics appreciated and what is a fair price these days?

We'll need pictures esp. of the drive side to give a valuation. But yeah these are nice bikes and Toronto is a pretty hot market.

Fixed up, I'd get $250 or thereabouts where I live. It should be worth more in a hot market like Toronto. I'd peg it at $350; we'll see what others say. The bike has a fine tubing set, quality parts, and the paint job is in good shape.

It is a bigger bike so it takes a hit on value a bit. When spring hits Toronto I could see it go for as much as $400 if someone really wants it but $300-350 is more likely if it is completely restored - new tires, cables, housing, bearings, grease, hoods, bar wrap, chain, etc.

Thanks to you both - it's a 24 inch frame (mid bb to top st) and it's killing me that I can't ride it and really enjoy the frame. However it'll make someone happy...

I am in Toronto, what size bike do you ride? I may have something that would work for you in trade.
If not, new hoods and bar tape and you can get $400 in the spring pretty easily.

As-is you can get $150 pretty easy. All spiffed up with all new grease, bearings, pads, chain, tires, tubes, cables, tape..................$425 is possible.

Jet- will do. I miss-measured - it's 23.5 c to c on the seat tube - I'm going to try riding it when the weather improves. I'll see how that goes....

59/60cm is a big bike for 5'8. Just sayin.

Mstateglfr - I know, but I can't help myself. I don't think I could be a 'flipper' - I'd get too attached to the bikes...
