Question Trek 7.2 Pedals Don't Turn Gears

Occasionally when I am riding the pedals keep going but the chain stops working as in bike quits moving. Any idea what can be causing this? I've had the bike tuned up twice in recent years and it works for a while and then back to this.

TIA!

Lol, the only part that I understand is "not engaging" but that certainly sounds like a possibility. Is there a way to perform a DIY fix?

The pawls are important parts of the ratchet system that makes up the one-way Clutch which allows the rear wheel to alternate between driving and coasting.

Depends on your skills, determination and tool access.
It’s possible to do what’s called a ”freewheel/freehub flush” which often allows the pawls to work as intended again.
But for freehubs, it does require some tools and will create a bit of a mess.
