Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

time spent on rollers?

for all of you ride on rollers, how long do you ride at one time?
1/2 hour, one hour, more?

for me, it's the heat (no wind) more than fatigue that makes me get off the bike around 45 minutes.
do you have a fan in front of you as well?

thanks.

Fan - absolutely. There are actually studies that show your heart rate goes up and efficiency down without air circulation.

Max time 60 minutes, usually 40-45.

1:30 so far. Next week I'm going for the 2hr mark. I can't stand only getting on the bike for an hour.

My coach has me do workouts on them about 3x/week. These are in addition to my regular workouts. I'm doing about 1/2 hour per session. Since I ride outside a lot, I'm mainly using the rollers to work on form rather than to try to do a major workout.

I agree with you on the heat thing. That's the thing that makes me want to end the workout early before I ever get tired.

I crank the tunes in the garage and roll there. It's usually about 40-50 so the heat is not an issue... staring at the wall, however, gets tiresome. I go for an hour max....usually 45 minutes or so.

Couple of 30min sessions on the trainer, with a fan of course - it can get dangerous without one!

Still waiting for my rollers to show up...but I'm doing 45 minutes max on my mag trainer, and I don't expect to do longer than that one the rollers.

1-1.5 hours.
Killer wind resistance unit and a TV cranked through a stereo amp in the basement.

I've done up to 3 hours on my trainer (not rollers)....I'd do more, but my ass starts getting realllllly uncomfortable after the second hour. I think I need a new seat.

ok...it sounds like i'm pretty much in line on the rollers. i typically get a couple 1/2 hour sessions in the week. i just need to crank up the fan!

and for me, i just put a dvd in on the computer and roll in front of that. definitely helps with the boredom.

Yeah, I do that with the Carmichael interval DVD's, but they're only an hour or so.....so when that's done, I switch on the Food Network and crank for awhile longer .

I have a pretty neat setup - a TV/DVD/VCR combo, fan w/ remote control, a stool for the remote/water bottles/GU, a rack for my towel, heater (gets cold in my basement), etc....

Just got my rollers a couple of weeks ago. Did 2 30 minute sessions, and 1 1 hour session. Need to get the fan set up. I have to mop the floor after I finish. On my second attemp, I had the front wheel come off the roller. My left arm was shoved in to my rib cage. It has taken about 2 weeks for it to finally get better.

Steve
-ouch, I hate when that happens.

Put the rubber-type padding that you would put on a gym floor underneath your bike setup.....works great, and pads/insulates the floor from the bike

And it's really easy to clean up.

My hat is off to those who can do anything other than "hang on" during rollers riding. I've only been on them for about two months, but I'm thinking about moving back into the hallway to work on my "rollers technique." Once I'm out of the "comfort" zone of the hallway where I can "elbow" my way back and forth, I tend to be able to accomplish less.

Then again, I only rollered four times in January due to unseasonably nice weather. February has been much more unkind and I've been on 5 times this week already.

Tv on the floor in front of rollers, masking tape guidelines that mark the widest I want to be on the rollers between the span of me and TV. Fan on top of Tv. Rollers instantly became infinitely more fun to ride for more than an hour.

PS-don't watch discovery channel show about military aircraft with cockpit views of dogfights. bad idea.

I'd think a first-person shooter like Halo would be disorienting in the same way. I wish I could do it.

I do rollers on recovery days, if I can't get outside. Usually 1 hr. I find they're too easy for work-out days, but I definitely notice a benefit to my spin. The resistance factor varies between rollers... mine are Krietlers w/out a resistance unit. I ride them in the garage, and it's usually cool enough that I want to ride ~15 minutes before turning on the fan.
