Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

About 4500 - 5k. Started commuting (20 mile RT), which helped a ton.

6K+ just in the three grand tours I raced.

Including all training miles and smaller stage races, probably 100,000+.

2017 = 14,430 km .... 80,071 m elevation

last year: 14,149 km .... 25,528 m elevation

so not much difference in distance between this year and last year, but more quality hilly rides

2018 will be a lot more if all goes to plan

3300 miles. The least since I started 6 years ago. But had the most centuries (7).

Goals for 2017 (there are more, but these are the cycling-specific ones) ... and my comments about how they've gone

Cycle more than 2016. 2016's total was 5760.76 km. I want to cycle more than that in 2017.
...... Check! 6365 km

Complete Petite Year Round Randonneur. This is a challenge where we have to do a 100 km ride each month for a total of 1200 km. There is some flexibility in that we can do 50 km one month and 150 km the next to make up for it, but most of the time it should be a 100 km ride. The challenge started in November (that's when the Audax/Randonneuring year starts), so I've done 3 already.
...... Check! All 12 and we went over the 1200 km minimum

In the past, I've done several CAM challenges (Century A Month, where I ride a 100 mile ride each month of the year), and would like to do that again, but realistically, with full-time work + university, I'm not sure I can commit to that schedule. However, I would like to do as many centuries as possible. Good training rides.
...... Check! All 12! And we actually did an additional 2 for a total of 14.

Complete Super Randonneur. A Super Randonneur is Audax/Randonneuring's standard series and the series which is required to qualify for longer rides in most cases. It consists of one ride each of 200 km, 300 km 400 km, and 600 km, each of which has to be completed within a certain time limit.
...... Completed three 200Ks and one 300K in BRM events + another 200K as a Permanent.

Complete a 1000 km randonnee. This might be a long-shot. However, if the 600 km event goes well, there is a 1000 km 2 weeks later.
...... Unfortunately no. Ended up with the Great Flu of 2017 instead.

One 1000 km month.
...... Two of them! March: 1002.7 km & April 1111.5 km

Cycle up Mt Wellington again.
...... Yep in February!

Cycletouring.
...... We did some hub-and-spoke style touring but that was it this year.

Edit: Also ... not part of my goals, I ended up with 58,991 metres (193,540.03 feet) of climbing according to Strava. Unfortunately, I didn't record 2 or 3 rides, so the actual total was slightly higher than that. Not too bad for a lady who seeks out flat rides.

Exactly. Flats are the boring parts between climbs. If you are not climbing, you are not riding.

I ended up averaging 100 feet of climbing per mile.
4,422.6 miles
443,084 elevation gain

1,229 (includes a few trainer miles) and not much chance of riding today. Plan on a LOT more in 18. Gotta start getting ready for the big 80th BD century ride in 19

4,234 miles for 2017. I did 3,031 in 2016, and my goal for 2017 was 3,600 so I'm happy.

I'm contemplating 5,200 for 2018. That would be 100/week. I don't know about you guys, but that's a lot for me.

My goal for 2017 was at least 1000kms a month, I was able to do more than that.
Final stats:
Total kms = 16016
Most kms in a month = 1711
Less kms in a month = 1107
Average kms/month = 1335
Road kms (on road bike) = 3707
MTB kms (gravel, dirt, paved roads) = 4828
Commuting kms (sometimes towing a trailer) = 7481
Rides over 200kms = 3
Rides over 100kms = 40
Days off the bike = 11
Didn't record vertical kms, but they are probably near zero - all flat terrain.
Not bad for a 66 y/o geezer I guess.

About 4,000, maybe 3,000 of that on mostly rural roads, two-lane highways and access roads. Double my 2016 mileage.

Strava says 4,954 total, but about 1,000 of that is errands and commutes and duplicate records -- I experimented with simultaneously running Strava, Cyclemeter and Wahoo Fitness at times to compare data, so there are a few duplicates although I usually deleted most after comparing data.

5200 miles.
330 hours.
310k ft elevation.
230 rides.

I include trainer miles and elevation b/c they are on Zwift/Kickr and are usually tougher than actual road miles / ft.

I love how Strava compiles an end of the year video. My Strava preliminary report shows 3,290 miles of road and Mtb riding, with 262 hours logged and close to 200,000 ft of climbing.
That's a bit off from last year, but I was unemployed for a few months last year so I had more time. All in all, I am satisfied with my efforts.

Does this work?

151 miles of that were indoors, and 816 were Citibike (average ride 1.8 miles). If it weren't for those little Citibike trips, which worked wonders in providing a cycling fix, I'd have gotten more weekday morning dawn patrol kind of rides for more total miles, but not more trips or active days.
