Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hanging bikes in garage.

Looking for a nice, space-saver solution to hang 4-5 bikes in our garage, either on the wall or ceiling. Something in this general direction.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

J hooks, spaced 8 inches apart screwed onto a piece of 2x4. Bolt the 2x4 horizontally onto wall about 6' off the floor. Probably cost you less than $10.

I used the Home Depot Fasttrac rails with the vertical bike hangers. Works really well and inexpensive.

I just drive in some nails and hang them flat on the wall. Except that the tandem lives on its workstand, but that doesn't take up much space, maybe 18" wide.

I built a stand out of 2x4's for 6 folding bikes. They can either be rolled onto the stand or lift the front wheel up to ssve space. Can do the same with hooks or clips for full sized bikes.

Cost was (3) 8' 2x4s, some screws and sbout 2 hours of time.

Another vote for the cheap screw hooks. The spacing of the studs in most garages is about right for separating bikes, or you can put the hooks into a 2x4 and then mount the 2x4.

I have tried more expensive versions of the screw hooks, like these. or some from the Container Store - really didn't have any added value for the price.

I went that route a while back. But, initially, I went with the really cheap, smaller J-hooks. Then, swapped to the (still) cheap, but larger J-hooks. The larger hooks are just easier to work with - especially with gravel and mtn bikes.

The board is mounted with screws into studs. Then the J-hooks could be spaced based on handlebar width - not 16 or 32 inches on center. I added hooks between the primary hooks for loose wheels.

I have two big rolling racks in the garage for storage. I put a long 3/4 inch pipe between them and hang the brake levers over the pipe so the front wheel is about 2 feet off the ground. It does take up more space than hanging, but it's pretty convenient.

I just have a J hook screwed into a ceiling stud and hang my bike with the bike frame parallel to the wall between the garage door track. Doesn't take up space and I can walk around it getting into my 4Runner.

I've got 6 bikes and things like motorcycle jackets and helmets hanging on these hooks screwed into the studs of my garage. Works well.

That's the kind of thing I'm looking for. Does it handle the weight pretty well, and how is it with thicker wheels (like kids' bikes)?

Would you believe the front tires were sticking to the paint!? It was like that "hot tire pickup" you hear about with garage floor paint. The front tires were pulling little round patches of paint off. The back tires only leave little skid marks.

Yes, the hooks are plenty wide for bigger tires. I used concrete anchor bolts in the wall and they are rated at 1,750 lbs. I like that you can slide the hooks along the rail to adjust for all types of bikes.

Harken Bike Hoister and pull 'em up to the ceiling. We have 6 bikes stored this way and we don't have to give up valuable wall space.

Harken Hoister Bike and Utility Lift and Storage System, 10-45 lbs, 10' Lift
