Tire question; is it just me? -Phx, AZ
I've lived in the greater phoenix area most of my life, and never really thought about how long tires last... until I spent a year in Seattle commuting. Using a conti contact II up front, tour ride out back I was getting 2500-3000 miles out of the rear tire... (estimate, it was about 50% tread when I left) put a new tire on the back when I moved back to phoenix and barely got 1500 out of it before it was bald in the center and needed replacing.
Front tire hasn't needed replaced but I'm noticing accelerated wear.
Is it just me or is the valley bad for tires?

The only thing different here is goatheads. Maybe, maybe if you ride in the heat of the day during summer, your tires will not last as long, hard to believe though and I have not had that experience.

If you “ride in the heat of the day during summer” YOU and your tires may not last long :-(

Another contributing factor could be what the road is surfaced with. Not all toppings are the same. (I know, sounds like a dessert ad!) Weather in the PNW is different that the desert SW, so it would make sense if the composition of the road surfacing is optimized for the weather resulting is slightly different textures, road hardness, etc, so the road crews have less weather related maintenance.

I have lived in AZ for almost four years now....and certain tires just do not last here. I tried Conti's for awhile but found they "shelfed" (developed the flat area in the center) pretty quickly. Michelins never made it too far before they were sliced open from all the debris on the roads...so I never really wore them out. I ran a set of Vittorias recently but ended up swapping them back out. They just didn't feel good in corners, especially if there was any dust or loose sand present.
I've had the best luck from Specialized tires. They last longer than Conti's, are pretty tough but do weigh a bit more. They don't grip as well as Michelins....but they last longer.
