Yeah I can see it from my back yard. It's getting bigger, I think it's around 400 acres now. Yesterday we rode and found the road closed due to a fire, but the news is saying this fire started today, so I don't know if they are related. I believe this one started near camp Williams.

My normally nice view of Baldy (gotta clean my windows):

Baldy is right about where that seam in my window intersects the photo. East fork is where the big plume is coming up

Those trees in the foreground are the SART.

I talked to one of the park rangers who was stationed on GMR, about 2 to 3 miles from the Village. From his vantage point he was using binoculars to scan the valley below. I asked if there was a fire and he said no, but conditions were ripe for one. That's the reason why the road was closed and he was on "fire watch." If there was a fire yesterday, it must have started after I reached the Village.

I'm still gonna try GMR tomorrow assuming there's no smoke by noon or so when I head out.

Last report on the news is that it's burned over 1000 acres.

I don't think they will let anyone up into the mountain.

It looks like GMR and Crystal lake will be off the ride list for awhile. Damn I need local mounains for training for Everest Challenge.

Fire is in excess of 4,000 acres now and containment is almost non-existant (5% as of 0700 with full containment not expected until 9/10/2012). Both GMR and 39 closed right now. Fire supposedly started right around camp williams.

Sadly it looks like GMR is going to be out of service for some time. With temperatures not looking like they are going to let up and with dense brush that has not burned in over a decade this fire has the potential to smolder for some time.

The one good thing (if you could call it that) is that right now the fire line is pushing north towards sheep mountain and there are no Santa Ana winds to drive it hard back into the houses in Glendora and Azusa.

I read that the fire is threatening Camp Williams. That's fairly close to GMR - I'd stay away.

We rode GMR on Sat. about 100 mi. into a multiple Tijunga, Angeles Forest, AC, 39 ride . . . i.e. up Little GMR (East Fork) after descending from CA 2, got food and drink at Camp Williams, finished down GMR to Glendora, Sierra Madre. No sign of fire.

By Mon., when I tried to ride GMR, it was closed at the barricade (Forest Ranger stationed there); so I rode the OCRR club ride instead.

JohnR and any one else looking for some climbing next weekend....

I've ridden Hwy. 39 3 of the last 4 weekends. I'm doing lots of climbing to prepare for my ride up Haleakala at the end of this month. I am considering riding Oak Glen and Hwy. 38 to Onyx Summit on 9/8 since Hwy. 39 will likely still be closed. I may just do Onyx without Oak Glen. Is anybody interested?

Here is the full route. Onyx only is about 62 miles. Now that I think more about it, I'll likely do just Onyx, but it is only Tuesday.

Hard closures are on 39 at Old San Gabriel Canyon Rd (just past where the SGRT bike trail ends) and on GMR at the gate. I have not been up to the Village but I would be willing to bet that the closure is at Glendora Ridge Rd on that side.

I spoke with the CHP for a few at the hard closure on 39. They told me that the fire incident commander has intention of keeping the hard closure in place until full containment of the incident is completed and he feels that it is safe to allow people back into the area.

They should make excellent progress today, probably not full containment but the rain will knock it down for sure.

Last night from about 1am until 3am I could see the fire from Orange, CA....almost looked like lava pouring down from the peak of a ridge. Had only seen the smoke up to that point.
