I've been wanting to get a cap or two (if I need a polyester and wool). My commute often sends me straight into the sun, or has surprise rain. I want something functional, without logos or racing stripes, or any of that nonsense. I also need something with extra-large sizes, because my head is super fat at 24"-24.25". I've been looking that the Surly wool cap, Walz caps, and Octopus caps. Does anyone have experience with any of these? Any other caps that are similar that I should be looking at?

For rain, tape a folded plastic bag (from the supermarket) under your helmet. For all other occasions, either wear a helmet with a small bill, or if going w/o a helmet, wear an adjustable velcroed-baseball-cap.

The baseball cap should have either the A's or Giant's LOGO. Without exception!

Cycling caps can be bought from most Cycle shops and are mainly made out of cotton. Couple of reasons to wear them and the main one is skull protection under the helmet. Keeps the sun off the balding pate through the ventilation slots in the helmet and keeps it warm in cold weather. Warmer weather and reversed with the peak at the back it will keep the sun off the back of the neck and stop sweat running into your eyes. Being cotton and the ventilation holes in the helmet- it never seems to get wet with sweat and and stays dry.

'Tis a legit question, and one I hope someone will give a legit answer to.

I have a nice 'roadie' style helmet that I won from the LBS but didn't use it during the brutal heatwave of this past couple of months. I used a ball cap that was mesh all over, save for the bill and the adjustable band/velcro, to somewhat save my eyes from the Sun. I've started using it again, but will encounter similar issues of needing to block the sun very soon.

I had a cheap Bell (Metro?) that had a visor, but that was a joke. In order for it to be effective, I essentially had to point my line of sight to just in front of the front tire...

I think I remember reading in some thread around here (don't recall which BF forum/thread it was) about how some guy was also into kayaking. IIRC, he used something from his kayaking hobby to fashion a visor for his cycling helmet.

I agree, for true Fred style. I rotate through three of these with random logos, having found them all on the side of the road.

You can wear it under the helmet if you must, with a plastic bag lining in between but that's usually overkill.

I wore the cap in the picture for 7 years commuting year round in Iowa. Helmet interface is not an issue for me. Good for keeping rain, snow and sun off my glasses. In the winter I would pull the hood from my hoodie over it. Also good for cycling in SWA for 6 months. Bought it for 25¢ at a garage sale. Reminds me of the kind of caps worn by baseball players way back in the day.Unfortunately lost it in transit from SWA and have been unable to find a similar hat that lies flat, has perforated fabric and a good brim, without logos.

If anybody knows of a source for a similar cap, both the OP and I will thank you.

I don't know what my cap is made of, but I've used several and they're great. The short bill works because it's angled sharply downward, and takes only a slight tilt of the head to block the sun at nearly any angle. Again, the design of the bill keeps it from blowing off - unlike a baseball cap. I suppose wearing a helmet would keep it from blowing off.

Only one complaint: mine has a black bill which is good. It had a huge WHITE logo on the bottom side of the bill. Not so good. It was so distracting I had to cover it with marking pen.

I have one each of the Walz in poly and lightweight wool. They're really well designed and constructed. I actually like the poly a lot more-- the wool doesn't seem to breath well and gets that "wet dog" smell. For wool I really like Pace hats which are considerably heavier than my Walz but seem to wick/breath better. However, the Pace is only available in one size.

I love walz caps. However, I have a smaller head and their sm\med poly cap gives me a headache due to being too tight. I gave it to my son and ordered a large.

I second the Walz Cap. I wear mine daily. So much so that it is a "signature" of mine. A friend recently contacted me again after she recently saw me out riding. The giveaway was the Walz cap.

I have a GIRO cap I wear when it's cooler/cold out. It gives me a nice extra layer to keep my head warm. I never would have bought one but my father in law got an extra from PBK somehow and he gave it to me. Now, I keep it handy with the rest of my cycling gear. If it's fredly, I dont care... it keeps my head warm, I'm wearing it.

The Walz L/XL is exactly what you need. Poly/Cotton or Wool will both be fine, they'll both start about the same size though the wool will shrink as you put miles on it.

If i'm going to wear a cap cycling with no helmet it will be a baseball style cap. I only use cycling caps under my helmet in for cooler days.
