Very sad news, he was a great contributor to this forum. I suggest the Forum be renamed to the Sheldon Brown - Bicycle Mechanics forum

His advice was always spot on. We all came to his defense when sometroll disagreed with him. He always answered emails, and usually would take our phone calls. We all loved him, and we all defiantly missed him. The Eternal Ride just got damn good mechanic.

Request to mods: Please sticky this thread.

My sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Sheldon Brown.

I didn’t know him personally, but I’m certain that through the effort and time he put into the bicycling web site he certainly got across a part of his personality – a part I really liked and aspire to. For me it was the ‘anything is possible’ and ‘don’t believe the hype’ attitude that seemed to be common throughout his writings. Just look at the pages on bikes he’s owned and fixed, or his postings here.

One other thing about Sheldon – he didn’t hide behind a moniker or avatar or whatever – he was “Sheldon Brown” and we all knew him as that. Nothing to hide and everything to share with all of us - a truly generous man.

I'm one of hundreds if not thousands of bicyclists for whom Sheldon took the time to send a personal answer to a bicycle-related question. His website has helped me immeasurably. I hope it will be maintained for a long time to come, both as an invaluable resource and as a tribute to him. The Goofy figure on my helmet was inspired by the eagle on his.

My condolences to his family. The man was a legend and a wonderful guy. To say he will be missed is an understatement. Adios, Sheldon.

I am truly saddened by his passing. He was a great man and I'm sure his family and friends will miss him, as will all the cyclists that he touched in one way or the other. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, co-workers, friends and compatriots. His lasting legacy is that he brought so many of us into the world of cycling and fun. Rest in Peace.

I've only met Sheldon a couple of times. It's so rare to find someone who's a true contrarian for all the right reasons ... someone who's smart but not condescending, a un-self conscious goofball.

The bike world lost a reluctant titan. To his family: your husband/father/brother/son was one of a kind. He will be remembered and he will be missed.

In the 80s when I was first learning about bikes I discovered Sheldon through his book and the occasional phone call (no net back then). Even though he was on the other side of the country he
would always take the answer my noob questions and take the time to make sure that I understood the answer. Many years later I am just getting back into bikes again and discover that he is still the man! He still was willing to answer my stupid questions and has been quite patient with me. He was also a good source of oddball parts to keep my 80's bikes going. He was an incredible treasure that I will miss alot. I just hope that when I pass on and have stupid bike questions he will be there to answer them.

Had to add my condolences to the Mechanics Forum. This is a tremendous loss. As much as anyone, he helped me get into wrenching for myself.

The Harris Cyclery website says there will be a memorial service in March. I hope many of us can bike there.

Sheldon Brown was a unique individual who contributed so much to the cycling community. He had such an active interest in so many things, and up to his last day, he had so much to say:

RIP Sheldon. Whenever I'm working on a bike, I'm sure you'll be looking over my shoulder.

Didn't know Sheldon personally but we did correspond through the forums many times. He was a precise and careful mechanic and excellent teacher. I'm sure his web pages will be kept but not having his personal touch (there, here, and other forums he visited) will leave a tremendous hole in the world of bike wrenching.

Too late, but anyway: thanks, Sheldon...were it not for you I probably would never have achieved LBS Independence. You will be missed.

I cant tell you how many times I went to the web and Harris Cycles for information that Sheldon put there,How many times I referenced Mr. Brown for some truly archaic bit of Cycling lore, and how great it was to hear him even only in e-mail put down the Biker law. It is a sad day, We all have much to learn from the way he lived and now much to live up to also.
Rest in peace Amigo.
