Sun Tour friction shifters. Prefer short with rubberized/plastic covers.

My guess is timing. Shimano was probably perfecting early versions of SIS about the same time. That, and the trend toward integrated groups, making it less likely that a mixed group would be on a new bike.

Not sure what for, because all my bicycles have standard downtube braze-on shifter bosses (bar one which I'm selling anyway) and I don't have much use for trimming the front where I ride usually, but the idea of front shifter trimming itself automatically is very appealing. Good thing I absolutely love my newest bicycle, otherwise I'd be looking for another frame to use these shifters on now

I don't find it difficult or exhausting to trim either derailleur, so the use of Symmetrics never appealed to me. I did though enjoy overhauling them and the chance to reverse the internal cam to use a reverse normal fd for the rare flip that had one.

Oh, there's no problem with that. I just grew lazy and complacent. My main commuting bicycle has BB spindle a few mm shorter than specified / recommended for the correct chain line and also the casette currently at the back is 7sp instead of 6sp freewheel to match the era of the other components. As a result I can basically shift from highest to lowest gear (on the big chainring at the front) and back without ever catching the front derailleur cage (not that I use more than 5 gears on that one). Which is not the case with my other bicycles. Trimming is a thing whilst riding them.

Perhaps I've gotten used to some cassettes and also some freewheels that have cutouts - and consequently weigh a good bit less.

I think that the newer Shimano freewheels might be the lightest ones in this day and age, the body is pared away and some of the cogs are pinned (so with a much larger central cutout).
Maybe silver paint can save their looks? I've seen it done and the paint seems to make minimal contact with the chain except at the teeth.
I've found spray paint hard to remove from a freewheel for what that's worth.
The E-bike industry has has resurrected freewheel development, some are even 10-speed now! Many hub motors still use freewheels and solid axles (with perhaps the non-drive side of the axle made hollow for the power wire).
I bought the Sunrace 11-36(?)T 10s freewheel, and was going to narrow it by removing the 11t and shortening the threaded (for a lockring) body using a grinder.
But the thing 1) weighed a ton, 2) positioned the big cog a bit too far from the spokes, and 3) oddly had the freewheel tighten/bottom onto the hubshell shoulder against a plastic sealing ring that deformed and caused drag immediately. So I sent it back. Mine also had a rare spacing error between a couple of it's cogs!
I did communicate with Sunrace, who offered as "an exception" to replace it (even though it was considered by them to have been sold out of their controlled market), but I ultimately simply returned it to the Ebay seller.
