Super Champion Mod 58 27" wheels
I pulled these 27" Super Champion Mod 58 (nice and heavy) clincher rims from my dad's basement. Is anyone running these on a bike? They're laced to Normandy hubs with a date stamp of '75 and old Wober W25 tires with a dark sidewall.
Interesting also is the early Zeus 2000 freewheel that is in a bag and zip tied to the rim. It looks to be English thread - 5 spd 14-21 gears.
I have no idea what bike my dad had this wheelset on but since he's thinking about retiring from riding I figured they were better off in my shop.

Im using similar rims on my Bob Jackson. 27" super champion "gentleman" rims laced to Campagnolo Record hubs. Very nice IMO. I believe Super Champion rims became Wolber at some point? Well, they didn't morph into Wolber rims but you know what I mean lol

Good, solid rims there.
Spokes don't look like stainless, that's a good thing since most stainless spokes from back then tended to break often.
Those rims were considered strong enough for tandems, and had the hooked bead edges. They add less than a half-pound per pair compared to average narrow rims, and they are 22mm wide and with wide brake tracks.

I had those rims on my commuter bike back in the late 70's and early 80's. They were some of the best in the day. New stuff is better, but these will suit many purposes.

Never seen a Zeus freewheel before. It is a little bit rare. Probably doesn't mean that it is good. . Also, I don't recall seeing two types of freewheel removal on one freewheel before, but
that may be I've never looked close enough.

Is the freewheel alloy? Would have been a race day only freewheel.

I have three wheelsets that use the Super Champion 27" rims, one of which is labeled Wolber, who apparently bought out the French company in the late 70s or early 80s. The latter is the Gentleman TA rim over Miche low-flange hubs, the other two are the Modele 58 rims over Maillard low flange and Maillard Normandy high flange hubs. All came to me well-used but seemingly indestructible, however the rear on the Wolber set has some broken spokes and we'll see how that trues up.

Excellent rims in their day. I, too, rode them.
That freewheel is most highly sought after. It can be taken apart and cogs swapped. These command serious money.
It appears that we need to have a closer inspection of your father's basement, eh?
We'll allow you to report back, preferably with photos.

Our tandem has a Super Champion Mod. 58 on the rear wheel with 48 DT spokes, a Phil Wood hub, and a 5-speed Suntour freewheel.

Yes, I run those on my Shogun 2000. They came to me originally on a Schwinn Voyageur. I rode them extensively last year (as in 5000+ miles on that bike if I recall correctly) after building up the Shogun. They're definitely not the lightest weight but they are for touring and I found them comfortable and reliable, especially given the workout I put 'em through.

On the reloading ammo side of things - I haven't even begun to look at that side of the basement.
