Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

Are 26 inchers with drop conversations better?

No photos? What stem are you using to fit the 31.8 cowbell? I have been looking to do something similar with my Mongoose, but the stem with the correct reach may be a problem.

I like my 29er conversion with woodchippers (cowbells are on my skinny tire road bike, love them both), but post a pic and change my mind?

I like mine ('95 Stumpjumper M2). 26" is a bit slower but handles slightly better on technical stuff than 29er wheels.

I guess they are better than flat bars for gravel rides, so yeah drop conversions are better.

Personally, I like my woodchippers better than flat bars offroad as well. Of course, I grew up on drop bars and only rode flat bars much later.

Hammerdog, the bike looks nice. Very similar to my converted 29er but maybe the lighter 26" wheels help with acceleration? I think the more upright position and drop bars is really a great combo. Actually, a lot like older road bikes before the road racing community really slammed their bars down.

Dang, now, I want to find a 26" frame to build with drop bars... My 29er definitely puts the rider far off the ground. It's a tall bike. A 26" frame should bring that down.

Most modern 29er bikes are low and slack. A classic 26" is going to handle a lot different, but mine are taller than modern 29er bikes.

My '94 litespeed conversation is really quite nice. BUT..... I'm not so super fond of the high bottom bracket. For everything but mtb riding I prefer my AWOL.

I would not discourage anyone from building a drop bar mtb. Its an excellent affordable solution.
