Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tire Help

Hi all,

I would like some suggestions on new Gumwall tires for my Vintage Eddy Merckx. They do not need to be real Gumwall, but rather gumwall look of the black tread with brown or tan sidewall.

A Couple of Considerations -
I have in So Cal and our flats are super common here - so I need something with good puncture resistance - Most important
I would like the most supple ride possible - Ride quality is my second consideration.
Weight/ racing is not of importance. I tend to do longer touring rides.

Thanks all for the help!

Anthony

My experience with GP5000s is that I wouldn't call them puncture resistant enough for touring. I've had them on my road bike for 2 years, love the ride compared to the Schwalbe Marathons I have on my Jamis light touring bike. But, the GP5000s seem to quickly gouge from road debris and I ended up getting wire shard flats in both front and rear after a year and maybe 3,000 miles on them. But, the bicyclerollingresistance.com testing site gave them a better wear/puncture resistance rating than I've experienced.

Assuming your vintage bike won't take anything too wide, Vittoria Corsa Controls are a decent option.
