Maybe, in the end, a balance type scale would be the most accurate to use to weigh a bike as we all never know how well the springed dial and digital scales we are using are manufactured and calibrated. I would assume that most scales available to us "regular" people would be within 5% of accurate at best?? Maybe we should all say "around so and so pounds" when we call out the weights on our bikes., and only to the nearest .25 pounds??

I figure OEM weights, plus or less what I do to it. Since they're all between 19 and 24, I generally don't get much farther than that.

I've weighed them on a bathroom scale using the "me+bike minus me" method, to the nearest tenth, 'cause that's what the scale says. Plus, beer can throw that off a bit.

My carbon bikes, I ride to LBS and let him weigh them. He likes to give me a hard time when I come in with one...."now that's a real bike.." Everybody's a comedian.

1977 Sekai 5000 in original build: 19.7 lbs

The Fiamme Ergal rims help - it's not easy to get rims under 300g anymore.

1976 Schwinn Paramount P14 track bike 16.9 lbs. Original bar and stem were steel, so it was originally heavier.

I think a spring scale (bathroom scale, in at least the analog cases) is highly suspect. Especially as one moves out of the range (say 50 to 250 lbs) that it was intended to measure.

That's what I was looking for. Thx

I use a hanging digital scale, bought it off of ebay for about $9. Well worth it.

I see the scale I bought is now available on ebay for less than $5 delivered. Just do a search for digital hanging scale

Just weighted a Mavic Module E red/green label rim. It weights 460g. It is about the same as the Open 4 CD from the 80's.

My favourite shop (after mine) has a digital scale that they keep well calibrated as they cater to weight weenies... these guys think a 21 pound bike is a tank.

I should bring in my extracycle sometime... it is 50 pounds with it's saddle bags.

Seems to be a pattern here with the Super Vitus 980 bikes. My (roughly) 1980 Mercier with SV 980 (Zeus fork crown, no less) weighed in at 21.46 with a Brooks Pro (steel rails) and tubulars. It now has a San Marco "Pirelli" saddle with Ti rails so, maybe closer to 21 lbs.

Thanks, Devinfan. It is indeed a Mistral set. Since I couldn't find any info on the model of Mercier, I just threw on whatever seemed to work best. Hence the Gonzo sticker on the headtube. The BB on the bike, though originally French, is tapped out to Italian, which made my bottom bracket hunting a bit easier (and cheaper). I think the tubulars on there in the pic are Wolber Aspen with Galli hubs, but have now been switched out to Mavic GP4s with Pelissier 2000 hubs (sealed). The headset is a French spec Campy but the Cinelli stem was not, so I milled it down to fit. She's pretty nimble.

My Peugeot weighs 22.2lbs. if my scale is correct. With 27 inch wheels and the components from a lower price model Peugeot.

I still find vintage rims are the cheap way to go light these days. Can you imagine what zipp would charge for a 250g rim?

My Trek 660 when it was in racing form, which now it isn't, weighed 19.4. That was with tubulars and racing tires (now clinchers and Gatorskins), lighter weight seat and seat post then now, lighter bars and stem then now, and lighter headset then now. This was also without any accessories. I thought at one time replacing the fork with a carbon fork and save at least a pound but never did it. Now it's probably around 22 but haven't weighed it in it's current configuration.

I have three beautiful Italian Stallions:

Cinelli Super Corsa weighs 19 lbs size 51.5cm
Gios Torino Professional weighs 21 lbs size 51cm
Colnago Master Light weighs 20 lbs size 50cm

Les Trois Amis

All perform superbly. Still my favorite is the Gios, has 24000 miles with Campagnolo Record C Group. The Cinelli is quick and agile with Campagnolo Record Carbon Group. The Colnago, still out with the jury, has mixture of different levels of Campy record.

1980 Masi Gran Criterium, 19.5#.

EDIT: just checked it again: 21.4#; the other number must have been with my lighter, newer parts on it.

1984 Trek 610 with tubulars and many other mods: 24.0#

Weights based on me plus bike minus me, on an Ironman digital scale.

Shocking, yeah!!!

Edit: Early '70s UO-8 with B17, 700x28c, mostly Shimano 600, and aluminum bars, is about 25.4# (an inch!).

Using bathroom scales, weighing myself first (shocking experience!) then weighing again with the bike on one shoulder, then subtracting the former from the latter - my Vitus 979 weight came out at 16lbs dead! OK, se we've got possibly inaccurate scales, a non-vintage carbon fibre saddle, cut down seat post and nylon bodied alloy cage pedals - but it's still the lightest thing I've ever ridden by far. I'd like to try one of those new 14.5lb carbon fibre Scotts though - stiff as well as light, but definitely not vintage or classic. However, as I get older it's only on climbs that weight is important, the rest of the time fit and ride are more important than a pound or two of weight.

(Sort of cheating but) my 1982 Venus is 18 lbs

My lightest mtb is slightly newer than 20 years old, but for mountain still quite vintage. 1993 Yo Eddy Team Fat Chance hardtail = 21.5 lbs.
