anyone here ever had it? i never heard of it before sunday. some cyclist dudes had a bottle at a party. apparently it's a Chicago thing. some kind of Swedish schnapps infused with wormwood. tastes very strange, extremely herbal and earthy and mostly unpleasant.

I love Malört! Love it. It takes some getting used to, but I actually like the flavor now. Sort of grapefruit and licorice and burnt tires and gasoline. It is the #1 way to get me in trouble: offer me a shot of Malört. I can't refuse. It used to be distilled in Chicago; now it's actually made in Florida but is still only sold here.
Currently just drinking diet ginger ale. Don't think Malört is on the docket for tonight.

Not true. Last time we were at the Frog you turned it down. You can, you just usually don't.

Huh, I forgot about that. Well, I got myself into major trouble at Holiday Club last Monday because people kept doing rounds of shots. I turned down the first round until I heard some people were doing Malört. Ended up doing 2 shots plus two pints of Cane and Ebel. Oops.

Today I'm drinking water to wash down Sport Beans. Best on-bike energy ever.

First a quick sunset bike ride (although too cloudy to see much).
Then, my new favorite "budget bourbon" - $26.99 for a 750ml of single barrel bourbon, and it actually tastes very good. Starts off a lot like Blanton's but finishes less smooth. Half the price of Blanton's and still has 85% of the flavor.

Right now a double-roasted French blend ground quite fine and brewed in a French press this morning (but I often use a DeLonghi drip machine or Vietnamese Phin as well).
The real story however is the incredible Porter that we had with our Jerk/garlic, honey and lemon chicken and pork shoulder BBQ on Sunday, Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter. Quite possibly the best beer I have ever had. Ink black with a carmel cream colored head; strong nose with roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, licorice, and a bit of nut and fruit as well; rich, full Porter flavor with light roasted malt character and a hint of coffee overall; excellent mouth feel with a variety of malt, coffee, chocolate, licorice, nut and fruit flavors reaching all areas of your tongue; strong but clean French roast coffee and dark chocolate finish with a bit of hops flavor as well. Truely one of the finest, if not the finest, beer drinking experience I have ever had and it went perfectly with either the Jerk or garlic, honey and lemon marinaded meats equally well. I'm hooked!
