Aspen is its own cultural ecosystem. Looking over the website, it looks like his clientele has the money not to care about authenticity, and they want something "unique." He seems to have nailed his market.

A couple of sayings come to mind: "Money doesn't make you interesting," and "There's no accounting for taste."

He basically makes his living from people who are ignorant and apathetic about the product: They don't know, they don't care that they don't know.
Doesn't mean he's honest. Just American. He has a future in politics, especially in America, where, you guessed it, most of the market is exactly the same.

Oh dear! The Merckx MX Leader is also a De Rosa! It is, fortunately, also sold out. That is good as they seem to be the same bike.

A thief will steal and a murderer will kill, but you never really know where you stand with a liar.

Corollary / riddle, an update on the old computer salesman riddle:

Q: What's the difference between a car salesman and a boutique bike salesman in an idle-rich playground community?

A: The car salesman knows when he's lying to you.

Oh, here's an idea -- someone who has not already burned this guy should look for an old Firenze on a nearby CL, and contact him about it as a prospect for one of his "rebuilds" / "restores". Make it look completely 100% in earnest. See if he bites.

Let's get the Trek that was rebranded as a Masi from Breaking Away; that'd be a good test

There should be no doubt that this guy is all about deception.

Wasn't the bike that got the frame-pump-in-the-spokes a Free Spirit that the movie people got from Sears? Masi wouldn't allow one of their own bikes to be destroyed, apparently.
