1985/1986 Mongoose ATB
I know vintage MTBs generally don't sell for much, but this one seems like it could be different once it's fixed up. I found a Mongoose ATB on Craigslist a few weeks ago, and just had to get it. My size, chrome frame, friction shifters, it was a no-brainer. Now that I have it though, I'm not really sure what to do with it. I suppose it looks like it will work better with my trailer than any of my other bikes, so there is a reason to keep it, but I thought I'd see what it might be worth first. It definitely needs some work done to it, new tires, chain, cables, all the bearings redone, shifter repair, and pedals replaced. Other than the rear derailleur being switched out for a Shimano 200GS and a different saddle, it seems all original, and I happen to have a Suntour Mountech that originally came on it. It looks nearly identical to this, though it does need to be cleaned up a bit:

The wheelset in particular sounds valuable, though mine has rusted spokes, and the bearings do need to be redone. The rims are in great shape, with very little wear from the brakes.
I know pictures of my bike would help, but my camera is charging, so it will be a few hours before I can get them.

So far I've been unsuccessful selling my 1984 Ross Mt. Hood posted at $250 on craigslist. I've had plenty of people interested, but no one actually willing to buy the darn thing. So my guess would be $150-$200 all cleaned up and ready to ride. Mine certainly is...

Unfortunately, most vintage MTBs get little respect. One with rusty spokes and needing service, less respect. The chrome Mongoose was a beauty for sure.

Hmm.... maybe this can be my winter project then. I'm thinking it would be awesome to do sort of a Rivendell style bike with a Brooks saddle, albatross or mustache bars, Suntour Barcons, switch to a 7-speed freewheel, big slick tires, and whatever racks, fenders, and bags I feel like throwing on. And aside from new spokes and handlebars, I think I already have most of the expensive stuff on hand.

Alrighty as promised here is a pic of my Goose, albeit a crappy cell phone pic. I went out on a night ride the night I finished er up and was so excited I had to snap a shot! It is an absolute blast with the Deore Mega-9 rear setup. I have the matching ice blue grips cut out so I can shift the rapid fire, and it all looks so clean I am in love!

they are pretty bikes and ride like a stretch Cadillac.
paid 80 for mine but it needed work. seen them go up to 200 on ebay all fixed up with some new parts. also seen decent ones go unbid at 50 dollars. fickle market.

I know this is an old post but I am looking at one of these on CL right now and I can't find any performance reviews anywhere. It looks like a sweet ride and I think the price is ok but I don't see much information on these. If any of you guys still own These can you educate me or link me to some informative reviews? Looking to use it for cruise/bombing around town and hauling child trailer.

They look kool and are very solid. I built mine up as a single speed with Phil hubs, campagnolo blue ano crank, Brooks saddle and Oakley grips. The bmx guys go nuts when I ride it to the local swap meet.

I had one. Rode great as an around town bike. Sounds like that is what you want. Go for it.

I sold this '85 full chrome Mongoose a year or two ago for $250. Thumbies, bullmoose bars, and a weird part mix. Sweet ride.

Bike pictured is 21". I'm a shorty at 5'4 so this wasn't my ride, but that didn't stop me from taking a short spin a few times, and yes, it was a very nice ride.

thanks guys for the info. i picked up the 'goose last week and have been riding it around at work. i love it. very comfortable. not sure why people say this is a heavy bike, it doesn't seem bad at all. Not sure if the sizing is right for trails but it is perfect for cruising. now i need one for the wife!!!

Hi all I just joined and having trouble finding a buy/sell section but looking for a Mongoose ALTA 26" MTB from the mid 90's -- my frame just broke but I have great parts and wheels on it, etc. Also, does anyone know if the Mongoose ATB is a better bike than the ALTA? Thanks.
